Wouldn't use ammonia on anything with lens coatings.

Yeah, I have the Zeiss towelettes, for eyeglasses, but I need to get the extra thick dirt off first, I believe.
Microfiber cloth is very good at getting heavy residue. But I would suggest getting the Zeiss lense cleaner in the mister bottle, saturate the lenses, give it a few seconds to soften gunk, then clean/polish with microfiber cloth. Might have to repeat multiple times but there is nothing involved that will harm the lenses.

Also.... of course I can’t see what your dealing with but... if you go the mister/microfiber route I would mist, delay, make a single pass wipe or whatever passes for a wipe. Then mist again, delay again, then single pass wipe. Once your confident you have removed the heavy contamination. Mist and polish with microfiber cloth.

Cleaning glass? Ammonia and newspaper always seemed to work well.

Ammonia can remove some lens coatings. That's why they recommend never using any glass cleaner with ammonia to clean eyewear. Scope lens have coatings many times too, and they could very well be harmed by a cleaner with ammonia in it.

    Really?
You said it to be funny?
Knowing that if I was dumb enough to try your "suggestion", it could damage the lens?
    Yep, really.

It never entered my mind that you would be dumb enough. Was I mistaken?

The reality is the question was "what is the best way to clean glass?" All answers thus far have been good ones.. Perhaps the question should have been: "whats the best way to clean some scrungy ass scope lenses?"

Sure, that was the title, but it's in the optics area of the Forum, and in the OP there is NO mistaking that I'm asking about cleaning glass of a scope.
