5.56 is often the default choice due to (usual) ammo availability and price. It also seems to be plenty effective in defense situations without the issues of over penetration that larger caliber rifles have.

There is a shortage of 5.56 and 9mm especially right now due to the high demand driven precisely by the fact that there are so many ARs and 9mm pistols in the wild.

Without the issues of overpenetration??

I've done my research that led me to believe this, others have already posted agreeing with me.

While it's not hard to argue that there are a plethora of 'better' options, for the vast, overwhelming majority of people who buy 5.56 firearms and ammo, they either don't know, care

What's wrong with having options? I own multiple different caliber rifles. There is not a perfect do all round. 5.56 is so abundant that it would be stupid not to start there. I spent some time in the desert and I can assure you 5.56 gets the job done just fine.

That's a good question. There are some very cool carbines chambered in other sizes. I'm not an expert to say what's best for the average American consumer, all I'm saying is *I don't think 5.56 is the best*

Also there are other platforms aside from the AR.

I feel like people go online and buy an AR chambered in 5.56 as flippantly as they buy a burger or a case of beer, without putting as many hours or weeks of thought into it. Maybe I'm just a nerd that likes to do research about firearms.

There is no best round.

Each and every round has its pros and cons.

5.56 despite its size is a highly effective round. Their are anecdotes of failure, but there are the same anecdotes for every round.

Bullets have three jobs:
1) make holes for blood to leak out of
2) Destroy the CNS
3) break bones so you get follow upshots.

No rifle or pistol bullet will always work. Put one through some thigh meat and it will hurt, but it won't stop a motivated person, doesn't matter if its a 50bmg, unless it hits something important no bullet "works"

In pistols expansion is a two-edged sword. Bigger hole, but less penetration. Pistol rounds are borderline on penetration anyway...

Bottom line is 5.56 will make holes for you bleed out of just fine. It will effectively disrupt the CNS and will break bones. It checks the boxes even out a few hundred metres.

Is it lighter than other bullets? Yes. Does that matter, not really for short range.

Is it a smaller diameter? Yes. Does diameter matter? No, not if it hits the goodies.

5.56 is cheap, light recoil and checks the boxes. More is better sure, but good enough is still good enough.
