    AZRefugee,

I had NOT considered that option! = THANK YOU.

OFFHAND, do you know what the usual twist rate of 7.62X39mm barrels is for the AR-15??
(I wonder if a "standard" 7.62X39 barrel will stabilize a 150-160 grain spitzer.)

ADDENDA: ONE advantage for those of us who handload is that the HAM'R can be fireformed from the VERY NUMEROUS (and therefore CHEAP) 5.56nato cases.
(IF/WHEN I do assemble a 16" barreled, folding stock, AR "clone" in .30 HAM'R, I plan to try some of my homebrew/hard-cast GCCB in it.)

    yours, satx
$147 on sale for a new 16" Barrel.

    AZRufegee,

The .30hamr IS said to be ABOUT 200fps FASTER THAN THE 7.62X39MM.

    yours, satx

Seems like a lot to deal with for 200 fps. I would think you could hand load 7.62 and get another 200 out of it. But since a barrel is only $150 bucks, and 5.56 cases are plenty, I suppose if one like to reload then why not!

    AZRefugee,

I'm NOT especially crazy about reloading per se BUT I'm CHEAP & prefer loading my own rifle/pistol ammo to SAVE $$$$$$$$.
(That's ONE reason that my "little" brother casts a LOT of GCCB boolits for me.)

My dad used to do the same. He had a mixture of recovered lead from the range and wheel weights that was incredibly hard and made form some really nice truncated cone 9mm that would not foul a barrel and were hellishly accurate.

    AZRefugee,

FYI, my 310 grain wheel-weight/recycled lead GCCB for my BIG-game rifle are KILLERS on most anything up to a T-Rex. = Any number of Elephants have been taken in Africa over the years with hard-cast CB & I would NOT fear to shoot a Grizzly or Polar bear with the rifle.

300+ grains of a GCCB hard-cast SOLID at 2000FPS will take most any animal, presuming a solid shot into a vital area.
