This thread is a gem. Judging from the 7 pages of comments (69 in all), one could reasonably conclude that no one commenting on this thread actually watched GunBlue490's video. But that’s what makes this thread such a gem. It serves as an exemplar of the more farcical side of internet discussions.

Yes, the video is long especially given the low attention spans of most internet aficionados (including me), but you really don't need to slug through the whole thing to discover that OP's claim is completely false. Within the first 3 minutes of the video it becomes abundantly clear that GunBlue490 is NOT at all "insisting that you shouldn't put oil on your guns..." In fact, a bit later in the video he even recommends a particular type of oil that he has used, and continues to use, on his guns for decades.

But to learn all these wonderful tidbits and more, you would have to actually watch the video for yourself. I know, it’s more fun to begin with a false premise, refuse to even look at the very thing under “discussion”, and then when the silliness is pointed out…the deflections begin in haste.

    Oh it’s a beautiful thing!

Note: I have carefully read the Forum Rules and Code of Conduct. No, I'm not here to insult and I'm sorry you feel that way.

Helluva first post. Must be an Okie thing.

Welcome to the forum I guess.
Yes, a very unconventional first post. And thank you for the welcome.

I'm honestly not trying to insult any single person here, but this thread is such a perfect example of the tendency on internet forums of no one bothering to examine what it is they're railing about, that I couldn't resist. I'll take my lumps as they come and hopefully learn a bunch in the process.

It’s fairly typical on a gun forum for people to comment on threads they haven’t read, or videos they haven’t watched, all the way through.

It’s also very typical for new guys, who don’t know anything about anybody on the forum, to come along and figure they’ll set everybody straight and show them the errors of their ways. It typically doesn’t work out well.

Good afternoon! I have been meaning to create an account but this post pushed me to create one. First of all: A thank you to you all. This forum (if you know how to filter the internet) is a great wealth of information and I use it often.

Now on to the original post: There is a lot that was left out from the original poster's comment when he created this thread. First of all, if you have not watched Gunblue490's videos, I would advice you to. My father was a gunsmith, and one of those lost breeds who could do just about anything. Gunblue in a lot of ways reminds me of him, someone from the days of old with a wealth of information to share.

The original post stated that gunblue says to not oil your firearms. That is patently false. Let me summarize: What gunblue meant is, use your oil sparingly. There is no reason to over oil your guns. Gunblue was a Vietnam Vet, an Arms instructor, an actual Armorer for 3 different major gun manufacturers, a Sniper and a Police Captain. Is some of his information a little dated? Possibly, I mean, as we grow into adults we get a little stuck in our ways, but overall his information is pretty darn accurate.

How many times have you visited a Pawn Shop, only to see a fine model 70 or some other nice model with a ruined stock due to over oiling? A stock that is flaking away- that is because the person who owned that gun did not know how to properly oil their firearm.

So what Gunblue advocates is this: Read your manuals, Learn about your firearms, learn about what the differences are in motor oil and gun oil. Gun's are not reciprocating parts that are moving constantly at high rpm's for extended duration. They are fire arms, they do not require a quart of 10-40 and anyone that oils their guns with WD-40 is asking for trouble (He has a video on that by the way).

I will say this in Gunblue's defense: I will trust a man with the years that he has, well over 50 years of gun ownership, with perfect meticulous guns that have been well kept for that time, over the words of some 30 something internet gun guru any day. I have learned a wealth of knowledge from his videos, and I would advise to give his videos a shot. With anything in life, never believe everything you hear, and if you question it? Go to multiple sources, find some consistencies and then come to your decision through common sense and extensive research.

Again, thank you all for your posts. I am glad to be a part of the community finally. Sorry for the TLDR but I really admire ol Gunblue and couldn't stand around hearing people call him out over misinformation.

Also I left one thing out: His videos are long and droning. But sometimes he has an older-man comedic quality that will make you crack up laughing. What I like to do is go to the ol shed, strip down my firearm and put Gunblue on in the background on my phone. Hickok45 is great for entertainment, but Gunblue490 is good for an actual gun education. Have a fine afternoon and enjoy this amazing weather!!!
