I was driving up hwy 146 between Texas City and Kemah and saw this shop that had a sign we have ammo, thinking I might supplement my stash of .380 ammo I stopped in to see what he had. He said how it was so difficult to get .380 ammo that the price is high, and he is selling it for $88.00 for a 50 round box. I just laughed an walked out. Too bad you can't report this type of price gouging to someone.
You want price controls on 380 ammo? I hope you don't vote. That's straight up communist thinking. Price controls on true life necessities are questionable but to use "gouging" on any ammo pricing is commie thinking.

Here's a quick refresher from high school:

Price is established by the intersection of supply and demand curves. Very low supply and very high demand...maybe record low and record high even...is record high prices. Very basic econ 101.

When you have many multiple sellers, then price collusion is almost impossible. That means that "gougers" can't exist. If I have 380 on my shelf for $88, the guy down the street will sell his for $70. Then I'll be at $65. Etc. If I can't sell ANY boxes at $88, then that's not a good price. It doesn't reflect supply and demand.

As another example, if I only get 380 once in two months (probably less than that now) and I put it on the shelf for the OUTRAGEOUS price of $50, and I sell out in a week, that means I don't have any more ammo for 7 more weeks. The reality is that I sold it TOO CHEAP. I should sell my last box right as my new supply comes in.

The reason you got used to $9/box 9mm is because of the Trump Slump. Massive production capability. Relatively low demand (no panic). So massive supply, low demand, curves shift, price drops. Again, basic FREE MARKET CAPITALISM.

Frankly, when people are selling water for $3/bottle and they call it gouging, that's not gouging either. Demand skyrockets and the water trucks can't make it in town during the hurricane. Almost no supply, high demand, price SHOULD go up.

Where it's bullshit is when there are cartels. Microsoft price fixing. 3 airlines collude to fix prices. Phone companies price fixing. Oil production. Diamonds. Mexico/Venezuela price fixing cocaine at $100/ounce (been the same price forever regardless of drug czars, interdictions, etc) (I watched a show on this recently).

Finally, I bet you don't have a problem with gouging when you ask your employer for a raise. Is that gouging? If you're the best criminal defense lawyer, you get $2500/hr. If you suck, you get $100/hr. If you're the best athlete you get $50mm/yr. If you suck, you sit the bench in high school. Best actor: $20mm/movie. Worst actor: $1.50 tip waitressing at Denny's. If you have what people want, those people have to pay you more.

What you really meant to say is "I saw 380 ammo for $88. I didn't think it was worth that much so I passed on it. I hope he can get that from someone to stay in business." His rent is due on the 1st every month and I bet it's not related to how much ammo he sells. $3000/mo due on the 1st. His employees want their $15/hr regardless of sales. But if he doesn't have anything to sell, he has to make the most out of each sale. Again, basic free market capitalism.

"Price gouging" is an offensive term to capitalists. I doubt you're really a commie so I hope you just rethink the situation. Vote Trump in 2020. Save our country from the real communists.

As a final funny note, I read that a guy gave a gunbroker seller a A rating (instead of A+). His comment was "great communication. price was a little high though." WTF?? YOU bid on it. The price was high because YOU bid higher than the last guy!! Auctions are perfect free market capitalism. (insert smack my forehead emoji here)

Price gouging is illegal's and yes you can report it to Texas Attorney General, Don't fall for the free market argument thus why Cheaper than dirt is being investigated for price gouging same for many other places.
Way to jump in with both feet and stomp on your dick. Lol.

Price gouging isnt whatever you say it is.

I hate cheaper than dirt. I hope they are sued into bankruptcy so we can buy shit off their dead corpse at the auction. That said price gouging laws are narrow and specific and relate to specific commodities during emergencies.

The stuff in this thread ain't it.

Cheaper than dirt wont lose any suit for gouging. They arent big enough for quasi antitrust type suites or charges either.

They were doing a good job of auto fornicating themselves due to business practices. Regardless of your opinion that IS free market principles at work, andcthe best way to deal with such issues.

Owner of my local gun store says his cost for ammo, when it is available, has gone up about 20 percent. These increases of 300-400 percent are ludicrous. Just make a note of who is gouging now and who is not. Don't buy from them now or in the future. And let them know why you are shopping elsewhere.

100% agree. And the funny thing is that CTD always gets flamed for price gouging. Then when things go back on sale, even people on this site who flamed them will be boasting about the great deal they got...$8.50/box on 9mm from CTD. As you said, CTD CAN'T price gouge because they cannot force you to buy their product. If they LIST (not sell) .223 for $1/round, and if they can't sell any of it, then they're stuck with it. Ha ha. Makes the complainers feel so much better I guess.

The mere fact that people shop there during pandemics and then shop there during normal times and the fact that so many people know of them means they must be doing something right.

I think IF there are any lawsuits, it's related to what I heard on how they're doing the selling. I think I heard they would sell you a product, take your money, then cancel your sale and refund the money just to list the product for a higher price. Now, THAT should be illegal (breach of contract, basically). But just high prices? Not gouging or illegal.

I'm sure if I went to Ben Carson's clinic and said I need the best brain surgeon in the world, but I want to pay the walk-in clinic quack shack prices he's give me that blank stare (he's too kind to say what I'd say). You want what only one or two people have...price goes up. A Picasso is a $2 pencil on a $10 canvas. But if you want it, you'll pay $1mm+. Gouging? No. Lunacy? To me, yes.

I have always followed a simple philosophy when buying anything. If I think it's priced too high, I just don't buy. If I think it's stupidly over-priced, I might just laugh though!

I believe in capitalism and free markets. I think anyone should be able to sell whatever they have at any price they deem is acceptable to them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am the same way. I have not used the term “gouging “ but instead use the term “scalping” because for the ammo “day trader” they are no different than the ticket scalpers of the old days that would wait in line ( and have an entire team wait as well) for concert tickets to go on sale and buy so many of them that the kid in class, or the guy that had to work was essentially forced to pay the scalper price if they wanted to see the show.

Never thought it should be illegal, but scalpers are pretty scummy. ;)

Scalpers might be a more accurate term, and I agree. I think of them as just low-life bottom feeders.

Well I'll be, I was wrong.

The correct term is, “hear, hear!” It is an abbreviation for “hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say!”

    Free market.

Folks just need to do as you did.

except it’s not and that’s something people don’t understand. Texas has a standing “state of emergency” which establishes the defined products and ranges for gouging. Unfortunately, ammo isn’t one of those products.

CTD is one of the worst about screwing the gun community and has been for decades and cancelled thousands of orders after Sandyhook to raise prices. I for one won’t forget and will remind others at every opportunity.

CTD can charge what they please as far as I care, but canceling and order after it was placed in a different horse of another color and could get me to make a drive up to FW and have a nice face to face for going back on their word.

I liked CTD when they sold more real surplus stuff instead of all the cheesy made in China crap.
