M&P blew up due to a friend's friend's lack of common sense.

Edit to add: He wasn't a complete stranger at this point and I allowed him to put the firearm together because at that time I was teaching them different things about firearms and one of them was how to field strip them. I keep the firearms away from the magazines on two separate tables, in the desert. We'd already gone over the ported barrel and slide and he was intrigued as to what the difference felt like, so he knew the ported barrel went with the ported slide.

Sure, at the end of the day I should had put it together myself, but it wasn't some stranger putting a gun together on his first time touching it. Lesson definitely learned though.

This is what happens when you aren't micro managing every last new-to-guns person at the range.

I was teaching a friend technique in how to hold the pistol, stand, and all of that. Meanwhile, his out of town friend is behind us ****'n with my M&P's which I had apart because I was showing them how ported vs non ported felt.

He asks me "hey can I put the barrel in so I can shoot this one next"? I said "SURE", not anticipating that this dumb shit wouldn't match ports with ports. Something I would had figured was complete common sense. Guess not!

    So he shoots it and...

Boy I wanted to slap the shit out of him but luckily enough the three guys I had with me, all being friends, all went in three ways to replace it.

But until I get it back, I decided to chop my other FS M&P so I can conceal carry with it. I love how these guns are so versatile, going from conceal, to sidearm, to what is essentially a pistol caliber carbine, or sub gun.

It's amazing how accurate and fast I can be with the MCK.

Anyway, if anyone has a spare frame, I will buy it. If you're looking to sell your M&P, PM me.

That’s tough! Glad no one was hurt and that you’re getting a replacement. I also understand your irritation, but to be fair, I’m not letting someone new to firearms reassemble a gun without supervision. Glad everything turned out ok and hope you can find a new frame soon.

These things happen when someone not as familiar with firearms tries to mess with them. I have done the same thing, only to regret it later myself. Being preoccupied with something or someone else, attention on what is going on in front of me and not paying attention to what is going on behind or around me. It happens. It has happened to me as well. And the only person I can blame, is myself for not paying attention.

We live, we learn. Glad that no one was injured too. Hopefully the friend's friend learned a lesson too.

Nobody assembles my stuff but ME,or a 'smith. I have taught many how to do AK's and SKS's but that was their own that they assembled, if I used my own, it always got redone by me. I am an old curmudgeon but I was trouble shooter and foreman on Elevators/escalators. Similar to guns,LIVES depend on my work, did that for 42 years-saw too much of "what could happen".

When I was in Armor's school in the Army my instructor "stressed" you can never be too careful around firearms. You military guys probably know what "stressed" means. There is no misunderstanding on a person's part when they are finished.

A few years ago I saw a guy blow up a Glock. When he came into the range building to sign in, he had to show his ammo. It was lead bullet ammo he had reloaded to a +P factor. The range officer reminded him that lead ammo was a no-no in a Glock. The shooter said he had shot it before with no issues. This fellow was two stalls to my left when all hell breaks loose. He fires maybe one and one half mags before there was a loud KABOOM.
The fellow was on his back with cuts to his face and right arm. An ambulance was called and the guy was taken to the hospital. The slide and barrel were found about five yards down range. The Glock frame had exploded. He was warned, but he knew better than anyone one else.
Another incident at this same range resulted in a death. Two guys had been shooting Glocks. Back then the Glock factory boxes had an inverted cone in the bottom of the box that was supposed to keep the pistol from moving around. One guy loaded his magazine and inserted it into his Glock. He then cycled the slide to load the chamber. The pistol was then put into the factory box. Secure, right? No!! When the guy got to his car he put his stuff in his car trunk. He dropped his range bag in first and then pitched the Glock box in. The impact of the box into the trunk somehow caused the Glock to shoot. The bullet hit the other guy in the stomach. He died on the way to the hospital.
Never trust anyone with a firearm until you have checked it yourself. Seventy two years old and still have all of my fingers.

Great lesson for us all. Thankfully no one was injured

What actually happened that caused the 'explosion' (for lack of a better word)?

I don't believe that running a ported barrel in a non-ported slide will do this.

I saw the original TFB post on this back a few years ago...

And, again, I'll ask, WHAT actually happened?

Do the gasses going out the ports curve around under the slide and 'cut' the frame, below? Or what?

Speculating at the time, what I kind of surmised was that the gases in effect locked up or slowed down the slide so much that the forces were then transferred almost straight down, breaking the frame... but I'd like to hear/read an educated explanation of what happened.

Damn dude, sorry for he loss of the M&P - but you kinda answered a question I've always had - does chopping a full size frame work to fit the smaller mags with the M&P - answer looks to be a resounding yes - tho I must ask how you treat the grip insert and the sear deactivation rod - grip insert can be chopped, but the sear deactivation rod holds it in place - does that get chopped too, if so does it still work or does it get epoxied into place? Or do you delete the rod and epoxy your favorite grip module? I really wouldn't mind chopping my gen 1 full size to take the 2.0's 15 round compact mag - I loved everything about the 2.0 compact except the lack of beavertail which I think makes the gen 1 FS shoot flatter.
