    To All,

ANY STANLEY STEAMER built after 1920. = The DOUBLE-ACTION, COMPOUND 25HP STANLEY was not only far ahead of its time but would in 2020 outrun ANY "street machine" & MOST "dedicated racing cars".
(My old/late/much lamented friend "Chief" R. W. Wiley, CW4 USN Retired, once took me for a ride from Hot Springs to Little Rock, AR in his 1924 STANLEY ROADSTER. = Almost 100% SILENT & FRIGHTENINGLY FAST. ====> At LESS than 1/3 THROTTLE, we were well over 100MPH!!!)

You might well ask, "IF you are correct & the last STANLEY cars were that near 'perfection', WHY are we not all driving a STANLEY STEAM CAR??"
(Especially considering that a steam vehicle will run on most anything that will burn!!)
The answer is that one of the twins committed suicide (FRANCIS was by 1923 in constant/severe pain from stomach cancer & shot himself in the mouth.- FYI, the family claimed it was an "unfortunate accident.") & the other twin (FREELAN, called '"Ozz" by the family) "sank into deep depression" & "dived headfirst into a liquor bottle".
(Freelan/"Ozz" was SELDOM sober after his brother's death.)

NOBODY was able to restart the company, as one of "Ozz's" last sober acts was to PATENT THEIR IDEAS in late 1924 (rather than the machinery) & when the patent expired it was 1941 & WWII had started.- By 1946 few people were interested in a 1920s designed car & efforts to restart the company failed.

The SECRET (if you can call it a "secret) of a double-action, compound steam engine (and the more high-pressure, super-heated steam that it is "fed" from the boiler) the faster that it (and the vehicle that it powers) WILL GO. = The potential HP of a 25HP compound steam engine is >900 HP, as internal-combustion HP is calculated.
One can imagine how fast that a 50-60HP compound/double-action, with a FLASH BOILER, steam car would go!!

    yours, satx

    To All,

FWIW, STEAMERS were/ARE NOT forgotten for powering vehicles. = ALL of the USN's nuclear subs are STEAMERS, with the boilers fired by fuel rods.

I drove these as a part-time job while I was in High Screwl:

There was a (car) lot in Covina Calif that specialized in Corvettes, Mr T's. He also had a lot in Long Beach Calif and from time to time would need to move his inventory between the two. My job was to recruit a bunch of students willing to drive cheap, $3/trip (tho we would have paid him), and do the drive. Anywhere from 3 kids to 10. We would get across 3 lanes of freeway, slow to 25mph, then light it up and speed away.

The above is a 1967, not sure if it is 327 or 427. Both were awesome!!!
