Chrylser made a turbine engine car. Think that maybe one survived. Others were destroyed due to stupid IRS tax regulations.
    Chrysler. Right. My memory sucks.

Correct my post in y'all's heads and comment away. That teacher was a paragon of truth (I'm being serious, here) and I know her husband had fields of old cars at the ranch. Maybe they did have one. But if it was ever there in the first place then now, 40 years on, it's likely just a pile of rust or long since sold off.

There were over 200 something of those turbine cars made, so it's possible that they somehow ended up with one that escaped getting crushed.

There are nine or ten that are known to still exist. Others could be out there rusting away in fields as we speak.

Last I read, there were nine or ten surviving in various automotive museums around the United States, with a couple in private collections. IIRC, the one Jay Leno owns is one of the very few operational ones left. He did an episode about his on Jay Leno's Garage. Very interesting vehicle.

I think that Chrysler made a little over 200 of them for testing and promotional purposes. Most all were destroyed because they were prototypes, and couldn't be sold to the general public. That was standard practice with most all vehicle manufacturers. They did the same thing with some concept cars as well. I think this had something to do with liability reasons. That concept vehicles and prototypes didn't, or couldn't meet the required safety standards to be road worthy, so they ended up getting destroyed or parted out.

Every once in while, some escape the crusher, and either end up in a collection, or in a museum somewhere.
You are correct, nine left. Did some research rather than relying on memory.

" Most of the cars, specifically forty-six of the total fifty-five produced, were turned into scrap metal so that Chrysler could avoid paying import taxes on the Italian-manufactured bodies. "

    DeTomaso Pantera.
I remember in 1971 they were $9995.00 in the Lincoln Mercury showroom. About the same price as a loaded Eldorado.

    An amazing value.
My friends dad bought one. We saw my friends 14 yr old brother driving it down the alley, obviously unknown to his dad.

When I was a teen, maybe 15 or so, one of those pulled into the Dairy Queen in the little town I grew up in. They guy was on a cross-country trip. Me and some friends spent 20 minutes ogling it ("Look! You can see the engine! Right there behind the glass!") for about 20 minutes before he came out and drove away.

    To All,

Speaking of "iconic" cars, here is a 100% true "car story" from my "misspent youth", which some members may find at least "somewhat amusing".

In 1974 I was stationed at Ft Hood & in early March I was notified that I was to go on TDY to Ft. McCoy, WI for at least 4 weeks & possibly up to 120 days.
(At the time, I was "sharing living quarters with" a RN/Nurse Anesthetist name Linda Jo W_______________, who was beautiful, as "car crazy" as I was & made LOTS of $$$$$$$$. - She owned a 1960 Jaguar XK150 with an Italian-made "one off" alloy body in BRIGHT RED/black leather interior that was not only beautiful to look upon but also BLAZINGLY fast.)

When I got home & told her where I was going on TDY, she said, "I want to go too. -We can take the Jag. & also, "I have a lot of 'use or lose' leave at the hospital," = I said, "GREAT" & about 2 weeks later, off we went to WI.

About halfway across NE, Linda Jo said that she was hungry as a wolf & that she had seen a sign for a Dairy Queen a few miles ahead.
We stopped, ordered food/drinks & then "tucked into our lunch".
(While we were eating, I noticed that nobody was even pausing to look at the JAG.)

About 30 minutes into our lunch stop, a man on a shiny-new JOHN DEERE tractor pulled into the parking lot. - The DQ emptied, with almost everyone, including the DQ employees, going outside to admire the new tractor.
(Once we got back on the road, Linda Jo remarked that nobody had even stopped to look at the red JAG roadster. - I, too, thought that that was "passing odd".)

I mentioned this later to a friend who was from a little country town west of Enid, OK, after arrival at Ft. McCoy & Thomas said, "I'm not surprised, as that Jaguar is just a TOY but a JOHN DEERE is actually useful." He paused & added. "I bet that thing won't even pull a horse trailer."

    yours, satx

I drove these as a part-time job while I was in High Screwl:

There was a (car) lot in Covina Calif that specialized in Corvettes, Mr T's. He also had a lot in Long Beach Calif and from time to time would need to move his inventory between the two. My job was to recruit a bunch of students willing to drive cheap, $3/trip (tho we would have paid him), and do the drive. Anywhere from 3 kids to 10. We would get across 3 lanes of freeway, slow to 25mph, then light it up and speed away.

The above is a 1967, not sure if it is 327 or 427. Both were awesome!!!
And sticker on a 427, 4 speed, postrac, side pipes ,removable hard top, ect was $4200.00

I was watching some automotive program on TV some years and they were talking with a Corvette collector about a 427 Corvette he had just found, and bought.

He said, "It's funny, but I run across more so-called factory 427 Corvettes, than Chevrolet ever produced!"

It's similar to the FACT that more than 100X as many people CLAIM to have been SEALS than ever entered (much less graduated from) BUDS or US Army Rangers/SF "claimers", who have no idea where DALONEGA, GA is.

One of the shops I managed many years ago, we did part of the restoration of the body and paint on a 1960 Corvette. That was a sweet looking car! It had been repainted many, many times during it's life. The new owner wanted it back to the original red and white paint job. We spent about six months stripping it back to the fiberglass, primer, blocking, sanding and painting it. Every bit of chrome was replaced with brand new, except for the bumpers which we sent out to be rechromed.
This post is worthless without pics.
