    To All,

WHAT exactly is an "ELEPHANT RIFLE"?? = W.D.M. Bell killed a GREAT many elephants with a .275 Rigby/7x57mm Mauser, so most any CF rifle would work IF you are a GOOD SHOT & have as many GUTS as "Karamoja" Bell obviously had.
(ONE of the many true stories about Bell's quips was when a "sportsman" at a NYC private club. who was "in his cups", was loudly bragging about how well that he had killed a great deal of dangerous game at 200 yards. - Bell turned to a friend & quietly said, with his usual "British understatement", "I would be rather more impressed if he had taken his dangerous game at two yards.")

Further, my Model 760 Remington pump-rifle, that Jessie at JES reformatted for me from .30-06 to 9.3x62mm, is fully capable of taking an elephant, especially "up close & personal".

    seeker_two,

ONE reason that I have a 9.3x62mm rifle is that it is ADEQUATE for any lawful game anywhere on Planet Earth & w/o "kicking your head off". = My rifle, with the quality recoil pad installed, & even with MAX LOAD 286 Grain JSP or SOLIDS, is NOT punishing to shoot all afternoon.
At about 9.5 pounds loaded & with scope it also won't break your back carrying it all day either.
(NOBODY can kill anything DEADER than DEAD.)

    Out here by the lake!
A few years back at the annual machine gun shoot 2 of the friends brought their dangerous game rifles rifles. A .460 Weatherby bolt gun & a .500 Nitro Express double rifle. I should have brought my .416 Rem Mag, but it was the machine gun shoot.

The recoil varies from bitch slap to push. I caught big hell for not wanting to shoot the .460, but figure it just as bad as my .416. My .416 was built knowing I'd carry it more then shoot. And when shooting it @ game the recoil wouldn't even come to mind unless it detached a retina!

    baboon,

FYI, the PUNISHING RECOIL of my "previous heavy game rifle", a "commercial Mauser" by PARKER-HALE in .416 Rigby Mag is WHY it is my "previous" rifle.

I believe that my 9.3x62MM rifle IS "enough gun" for Cape Buffalo, Lion AND/OR a BIG BEAR.
    (I'll NEVER go elephant hunting.)
YES, Pastor Roy is goading me again to come hunting with him in Northern AK.

    Raffs in 4 Bore!

    Moonpie,

FWIW, Lord Robert Baden-Powell (YES, the founder of the Boy Scouts) KNEW a British COL of The Indian Army during The Boer War, who had a TWO-BORE DB rifle which he said weighed "Just over a Stone." = 2O LBS.
(I would NOT even consider such a "SMALL BORE CANNON" from the shoulder.)

NOTE: A 2-bore conical bullet weighs about 1/4th POUND each
(Can you imagine what the "kick" from that "monster" would be like??)

A .416 Rigby & the .416 Remington are ballistically very similar. The big difference is the length of the actions uses to accommodate case length. Most every Rigby I shot weight 2-3 pounds more then my Remington. my .416 Remington is very hash when compared to my buddies .500 N.E..

Your better designed dangerous game rifle tend to be straight walled cases. IMHO straight wall cases are the pushers. The straight wall cases extract & eject way better being low pressure cases. Sure don't want problems when the animal is charging.

Would be more impressed if he had broken more than what looks like a thin cast aluminum valve cover.

    baboon,

IF I could find another Remington Model 700LH in .30-06 or .35 Whelen, I might well "waste some 'mad' money" on converting the 700LH to "controlled feed" & to .400 Whelen Improved.
(An Army buddy has a Winchester BA in that wildcat caliber & it PUSHES rather than KICKS. - DEADLY ACCURATE out well beyond 200M, too.)

The "BIG Whelen" is everything that the .444 SAV was intended to be & IS NOT. = The .444SAV uses a short/stubby bullet that "sheds velocity" QUICKLY & has a RAINBOW trajectory, too.
(You may wish to check out what Chuck Hawks said about "the BIG Whelen" as A KILLER, with that LONG/"heavy for caliber" bullet. = Melvin R_________ says that he killed a very large Bull BISON with his Winchester BA & said that the long GCCB @about 1800FPS "passed through" the bull's thorax, at about a 30 degree angle & was NOT recovered.)

Solids are designed for deep penetration. A soft point would have expanded some on the hood, but the engine would have shown about the same damage. The thickness of elephants, rhino, hippos & cape Buffalo hides warrant the use of a solid.

I remember a hunting video of a guy shooting a .405 Jefferies on a broadside Cape Buffalo. 1st 3 shoots looked like the passed thru completely. Nothing of the buffalo vitals hit, it just stood there taking rounds.

Nothing to do with it being a solid. I’m just saying it didn’t penetrate anything that was really hard to break. Send something though the cylinder walls and kill the fucker with 1 shot. An aluminum hood, some plastic, and a thin cast aluminum valve cover aren’t exactly mind blowing penetration results.

Truth- My Dad was one of the people that built THAT gun!
Fairing from a Japanese 20" gun mount, shot with a US 16" gun across the Anascostia river, Wash D.C.Naval Gun Factory 1940's. Exhibit on display there at the museum. Test shot was actually using compressed air. Making this the worlds most awesome air rifle!
