Some of the LGSs are doing better at dealing with this situation than the big boxes. They may not have the inventory but when they do, they do a better job of giving more people opportunities to get what they need, especially without waiting an hour or three in line for the store to open.

Abilene Indoor Gun Range has stocked reloading gear and supplies for a long time and at what appear to be higher levels than the big boxes. Even they are running low on some things but it is worth checking out.

I never really considered reloading because (A) I do not have the time (B) factory ammo is pretty good these days, and (C) I did not see any value in it. Now that 357 magnum ammo is $60 a box I may need reevaluate C.

    A. You make the time by deciding what is a priority. Most people find reloading to be relaxing and a way to de-stress. Even when I was working 70 to 80 hours a week, I could still find time to reload, and still do other things that needed doing as well.

    B. Factory ammo is great, for the greater average of guns, because it's average ammo. Handloaded ammo can be tailored and perfected for an individual and specific gun, the way factory ammo can't.

    C. I can reload premium ammo, with premium bullets for way cheaper than the cost of economy factory ammo.

I don't since it's a hobby. Would you include an hourly job rate for going fishing to determine who much the fish you cleaned and ate cost? Or deer hunting?

Hunting and fishing are ultimately luxury items in 2020 as the reality is that the cost of everything well exceeds what you can otherwise get from the grocery store.

This may be less true in other states that have lots of public hunting.

Looking back, reloading never really saved me money. It kinda made sense when I was a student. . . It really don‘t make sense now that I’m a professional. I did like the variety. I also don’t think most reloaders can make better ammo than “premium” factory.

Far be it from me to tell someone not to reload, but most people would be better off just buying factory ammo in bulk when there isn’t a shortage.

Orrr... like me. I'm 100% catch and release. I figure with boat, tackle, electronics, fuel, oil, driving time, misc. In any given year each fish I catch ends up costing me about $800.00ea.

Well just an observation and my 2 cents. I've been going to the same academy store for years near my workplace. Often enough that I know several employees. For the last several months they limited bulk pack buys to 1 a day. I had run into 100 Rd boxes of 223 and 7.62x39 steel at fair prices. Then came a wave of Winchester m855.

After I got lucky a few times, I felt relaxed enough to sell off some of my stock. Now, I'll go in before work around 9ish and see the same couple of people including petite Asian women and a few beardos. I could be wrong but I don't think they're gun people. They seem to never know what they want and just buy what's there.

The other day, they lifted the 1 bulk pack per customer rule and now the neckbeards are cleaning house. One of them told me the first customer through the door brought his adult daughter and bought up all the bulk packs of m855. So I think it's true that the manufacturers are cranking it out but the demand is just not letting up.

Another location had powder and I was tempted to buy most of it up but 2 lbs of 4064 was the only thing I knew I'd use right away. I guess like Doug I'm somewhere between the hyenas and vultures but I guarantee you several members here have benefitted from my visits in addition to my pocket book.

Huh???? I buy ammunition for me when it's available. Never have and never will buy to resell. Too damn hard to come by. Welllll... if some one wanted to offer me $100.00 for a 50rd box of 9mm steel case - I'd think about it. I have been known to give ammunition away but you gotta be family to qualify for that deal!

If you are more concerned with dollars per hour than shooting per dollar, it ain't worth it.
It is more about recreation and accuracy per rifle for me.

I have several friends that I’ve loaned ammo to this year. I wouldn’t sell it to them because I would feel bad charging the current market value. So far, all but one person has returned my ammo plus A few hundred extras. The one exception held onto my ammo as spares until he was able to find some and then gave my original 200 rounds back to me.

I figure by the time I buy a bass boat, rods and reels, tackle, bait and a truck and trailer, that first fish is going to cost me about $100K! :what:

When I bought my first M9 I used to stop into Carter's Country on my way home and buy a few boxes and stick them back. Was filling up some mag's this AM thinking about a range trip and noticed the price $8.97 for 50 rounds. Gunbroker has ammo for roughly 10 times that today. Something stinks here. You know wages and materials haven't gone up that much. Yes, they are making all they can. I would be too if I could get an inflated price like that.

Manufacturers are not charging that much more...when I can actually get it which is rare..9mm from the distributors is still running about $10.50/bx.....retailers are where the huge mark up is occurring....

That and the idiots who are buying and then reselling it at gun shows and gun auction sites.

I think it's combination of several factors that sort of hit all at once. Last year saw record numbers of first time gun buyers and of course they were also buying ammo. Then factor in Covid 19 which probably slowed down production of ammo as well. Then lots of people buying up ammo, probably didn't help either.

I still have a couple of thousand rounds of 9mm CCI Blazer aluminum from back when Academy regularly put it on sale for $3/box of 50. I'd be embarrassed to accept what people would be willing to pay these days.
