Those only transmit FM. There are 10m FM repeaters out there that work great, but the majority of the 10m traffic is SSB.

    TheDan; All,

GOOD POINT. - You reminded me that I can get a POWERHOUSE of a 10M machine put together & "on the air" CHEAP, that should cover all of "the likely affected area" of the Gulf Coast of Texas, with a DECENT antenna. = LOW BAND GE FM transceivers are VERY CHEAP & OFTEN free after ham-fests.
(My first GE Master Exec that the SD issued to me 4 decades ago is still being used by a VFD member in Daingerfield. = Those old-school GEs are TOUGH.)

ADDENDA: Inasmuch as there are only TWO 10m repeaters that are active in TX right now, look for me to put one on-air in the next few weeks. = I talked to my Elmer this PM by phone & he said that IF I provide the 2 LOW-BAND/LOW SPLIT mobile radio "drawer units" that we can put it together for 200.oo or maybe less.
(The Ft Worth repeater is "down for the count".)
"KXK" said that he will build the voter, etc. himself. He further said that 50-60 watts output should be plenty to cover the main part of the coast & turned down from 110 watts that, "---- those old GEs will run for decades.")

MAYBE sited in the ROCKPORT area.

    THANKS & 73 de satx

It supposedly receives AM 11m (CB) from what I gather and probably could be Modded. It is a good point though. With a good Antenna for 10m this thing can get some distance on 10m Simplex.

I'm not sure someone could find a better price to performance/coverage radio. Though it is made in China.

It does stink that an affordable "all band" radio doesn't exist. The least expensive way to get on 10m is to pick up an "export" CB with a VFO, and clip the little wire that limits it to only 11m.
Agreed. If you find one let me know. I am trying to decide upon the TYT Quad Band, or multiple units for different bands independently. I like to have the option of a Mobile or Base depending upon the day, I don't see myself getting an all band QRP as there is no redundancy, again. Two is one, one is none.

TYT is made in China By a Chinese company. Ranger is a Taiwanese company, although some (not all) of their manufacturing is done in China.

    There‘s your price difference.

I'm looking at setting up my Kenwood TS590S here at the house. I don't have much room for a vertical or a long wire antenna. Im thinking an end fed half wave might work for 10 - 40 meters.

    andre3k,

Do you have room for a SINGLE 30-40 FOOT (OR a "convenient" tree limb for a ) "center support" for an INVERTED V that is 135 FEET long??
(That old-school "homebrew antenna" will work FINE on 6-80 METERS, with a tuner.)

IF you do not have that much "free space", a one or 2 ten-foot sections of 2" ID plastic pipe, wrapped with many turns of "speaker wire" (configured as a 1/2-wave dipole) will bring in many distant stations.
(K4SKX in "densely populated" Northern VA has had "good success" with that "shortened dipole" & "hung from the rafters of his townhouse's "severely HOA-restricted" attic.)

    TO ALL,

I cannot resist the temptation (The Devil made me do it.) to quote a piece of "HAM RADIO POETRY", based on "personal experience", entitled, "THOUGHTS ON ERECTING A FULL-SIZE 160 METER DIPOLE ON FIELD DAY, 2009". =======>

"I fired a spark plug into the air.
It came back to Earth I KNOW just where.
Though aimed at a lofty tree limb that stood afar,
PIERCED the windshield of my mother-in-laws' new car".

    TO ALL,

IS ANYONE other than me interested in a DEDICATED 10 METER FM rig that covers ALL of the 10M REPEATERS & 4-5 SIMPLEX FREQUENCIES, in a "box" that is small/tough enough to be installed in a car/PU??

I "have a line on" a "good sized pile" (from an out-of-state ISD) of MIDLAND LOW-BAND/LOW-SPLIT Land Mobile Radios, that are "field programmable" & for about 25.oo each plus S&H.
(I'm GUESSING that including S&H plus paying to have the radios programmed, that the "out of pocket" cost per unit would NOT exceed 50.oo each.)

FWIW, in my experience the "old-school" COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL radios are MUCH TOUGHER/LONGER LIVED than "conventional ham gear".

    Texas Lone Ranger,

That's all that I know as of yet, except the radios are supposedly 50w output.
(I do NOT even know how many units that the ISD has.)

IF enough people are interested, I'll dig into the situation more. = "My source" said that the ISD wants to "sell all or none".
(FYI, in 2008, my brother & I "brokered" a similar deal for Northern VA, WV & MD hams on a lot of > 50 KENWOOD LOW-BAND/HIGH-SPLIT/42-50 MHZ LMR units, programmable to 6M from a KY county's VFD & after everything was done the "out of pocket" for each radio was about 29.oo each. = PRETTY CHEAP for a 6M mobile with 70W & 50+ channels, imo.)

    yours, satx
