    Out here by the lake!
I get free WiFi and the owner of the company told me to get a fire stick for TV. I bought one that was jail broke and it was just broke! I don't want another one that does not work but 1 day. No I don't have or plan on getting Alexa.

I mean, they make it real easy to watch Netflix, Disney, AppleTV+. Also has a real easy way to screen share (which is why we bought one). The FireCubes are basically a fire stick with an Alexa.

    Watch a want it for?

Roku Streaming Stick Plus is probably what you’re looking for.

Here’s every service/channel you can access with it. Note that some are pay services, but Roku’s ecosystem is top tier, second only to AppleTV, but that device costs $140 more.

We use Roku, lots of models, lets us sign into some of the newer services that our older smart tv wouldn't support. Also was able to return several cable box and I believe save $7 a month per unit as spectrum supported on Roku. You need good wifi though and we have a mesh system and good wifi throughout the house. Not sure what a "jail broke" firestick does. As long as we are subscribed to a service we get it. HBOmax is free for us but none of our smart tv could upgrade to it but the Roku sure does.
I don't know if you will have a problem though if it is not your wifi network. Might make it hard to activate a particular tv.

No reason to jailbreak anything on the firestick.

Like a cell phone or computer, there are apps you can download that can provide you with the content you want to see. You sign up within the apps, and pay for what you stream. The only difference between the Firestick and all the other streaming sticks such as ROKU, etc.; is that this is directly linked to your Amazon account. Any app purchases or things you want to see/stream will be charged to you through your Amazon account.

There are downloadable apps (not jail-break) such as KODI, Stremio, Plex, and Media Portal that can provide free streaming content such as the latest in theater movies, music, and shows. With some tweaking in the settings they work, but they are very finicky and only work when someone shares it with you. I used to do that, but I would rather watch other things these days. I just pay for them and get a quality viewing.

The apps I frequent on my Firestick are YouTube, Pluto TV, Discovery Plus, Disney Plus, and Netflix.
Pluto TV has Newsmax so I get my news from there, Disney is for the kids, and Netflix, Discovery, and YouTube are pretty standard for everything else.

I like the big ones, half inch in diameter, 6 or 7 inches long... makes them easier to hold and strike!

(Probably destined for the out of context thread, but then again, it already is here...)

Got tired of Direct TV’s price increases every 6 mo. When it went over $200, I got rid of it and went to Roku. No need for me to subscribe to anything; I don‘t even have enough time to watch a fraction of the free stuff.
I'm about to do the same. Wife want to get local channels to watch the news. How does one go about this?

Sorry @baboon no inntention of thread jacking.

Roku allows an OTA antennae to connect to some of their sticks. Otherwise, either OTA to the TV or some services carry local channels in the subscription options.

    ^^^ This.

Although I have a large antenna hooked up to catch UHF channels OTA, there are smaller antennae available expressly for city/apt dwellers too, and typically many channels are available today. I think Congress passed a bill mandating it, but not really sure, just know that it abounds.

+100 for Roku. It's easy to set up, has a great interface and access to just about everything you can imagine.

I used my Roku to host my Prime video streaming, and thru that I had pay channels HBO, Starz, CBS All Access, etc. Most available with a free trial period.

I also discovered they have live TV channels and I've been watching some fights on the Stadium channel. Many sports channels there, and all other genre such as Family, etc.

We started out with a FireStick about four years ago. In the beginning it was great. Within about six months, not so great. It would lock up, or freeze and you would have to unplug it and restart it constantly. Got to the point at least once or twice a day.

We decided to try out the Roku instead. Ten times better, and can access the same things as the FireStick, and more than half the price. The only advantage the FireStick has over the Roku, is internet access like a smart phone, computer or tablet.

    Another satisfied Roku user!

Depending how close you are to a city, over the air OTA antenna works for me. I get 65 channels living near Houston, not all are in English. My antenna is on the wall behind the TV, on the roof would work better.

My Roku is the little box, instead of the stick. It gives me a heat warning every once in awhile under heavy YouTube use, I don't know why. But it seems to calm down after a bit. I've also had it lock and had to go over and unplug it... I think that is from my slow internet connection or from too many button pushes too fast, or both.

    No habla espanol?

I don't well enough to enjoy those channels, but my TV allows me to customize the channel list.... so no hay problema!
