My 12 gauge is stored in a cool, dry room but has needed to be cleaned 3 times since the last time I fired it. Keep getting rust on it even though I oil and swab it during cleaning using Hoppe’s and RemOil.

anyway to keep this from happening?

There are various anti-corrosion sprays or wipes that will help with that. Corrosion (rust) is an electrochemical process. There is a small cell that forms. Those anti-corrosion chemicals sort of short circuit the cell. You can also block the reaction by keeping moisture and air from the surface, which is what you've been doing with oil. However, oil doesn't last long. Think about what happens when you mix oil and water - the oil rises to the top. So if you have a metal surface with oil covering it, any water that gets on it will raise the oil off of it. A better solution? Wax. Again, there are several commercial products, but I've been using Minwax paste wax (for furniture) for years. I say that "years" because a single can (from any local hardware store) will last for decades. It doesn't take much.

I just bought a new product that's supposed to be really good called, EDC1. I talked to the owner of the company at a knife event and it's essentially a type of wax.

Here are some links for examples:

    Barricade Rust Preventative
    Rust Blocker
    Minwax paste wax
    EDC1 anti rust

I should add that it's a good idea to use both the anti-corrosion chemical and wax. Clean the gun, spray with anti-corrosion, wipe down, wipe on wax, let it dry a few seconds, wipe down.

If the gun is in a closet or safe or something, you can also get one of those damp-rid things from Walmart or hardware store. It's full of a salt that attracts and absorbs the moisture in the air. Only good if its a closed space, otherwise it gets used up quickly.

thanks. I keep it accessible in my closet. I’ll look into the wax and blockers you posted

Gun socks make a claim to keep rust away in storage. Never tried one although there is one in a bag somewhere around the house. I have had good results from finishing up with a silicone cloth wipe down.

I have guns which have never been fired in my lifetime, and basically never been cleaned.
Have not seen any rust, or corrosion on them.
All that's touched them is probably WD-40.

Wear gloves when handling your firearms.

Liberals secrete an acid that eats away at anything related to a free state. Its insidious and seemingly unstoppable like a massive glacier flowing to the sea.

Boeshield t9. Make sure the storage area has as little humidity as possible.

Thanks. there is no humidity in the closet. but i thought the Hoppes was supposed to be the best for avoiding the rust effect, even if it was in humid evenviroment

I use ballistol and have never had rust form on any firearm even ones I don't fire or pull out for years, however, I do reapply once a year usually.

Is that any better than the RemOil? all of my stuff is stored in the same closet, but my shotgun seems to be the only one that ionizes. weirdest shit ever. I leave my handguns in the holsters in the same closet, and nothing. My rifles are mounted on the wall in the same closet, but still nothing. i thought maybe it was the shot i have, but its not a cheap build. (Mossberg 88). and its only on the magazine/chamber. not on the barrel or the trigger

Not a fan of WD-40 for anything other than my door hinges.

i only got the 12g for the house. I dont know if wrapping it with anything is going to serve a purpose unless i can shoot it and reload without interfence.. Thats the reason i didnt keep it i the guitar case. i know there are ways to keep it from the elements, but i didnt think the elements in my closet would be an issue untill i spent 30 minutes 3 times in the last 2 months trying to clean it ... lol

Thanks. there is no humidity in the closet.
I find that just about impossible if the gun keeps rusting. If it's getting rusty, the room/closet probably is not as dry as you think. Relative humidity is probably fairly high. I have had several firearms in a secure vault, in a locked cubbyhole so to speak, inside a closed box inside the cubbyhole (you know, kind of - sort of - almost like a safe deposit box). I have a desiccant in the box that has an indicator that turns pink when it picks moisture. Once the indicator is pink it is time to rejuvenate the desiccant in an oven. In the course of just over one year, it just started to turn a bit pinkish but is still mostly blue. The vault is temperature & humidity controlled. That place has very little humidity but still has some humidity as can be witnessed by the desiccant indicator starting to turn pinkish. Is your closet humidity controlled to keep the humidity at a level that eliminates virtually all humidity? Your claim that there is no humidity in your closet seems very unlikely considering the fact your gun keeps rusting.

thanks. i just put my humidity monitor in the closet to see if it shows anything. im just wierded out that its only my 12G and only on the chamber. the oils are still on the barrel and receiver.. no rust at all. lol

Do you mean only in (not on) the chamber? If that is the case, it is possible you have shot corrosive ammo through it.

yes. IN the chamber. (it stays loaded). I didnt even think the shells would be the issue since they are plastic (#00). but ive cleaned the entire gun 3 times since the last shots.. Ill check in the morning.

Thanks for your help with this

26% RH after almost 24 hours. I’m cleaning it again right now. I’m switching out the shells and gonna just keep it under the bed. I give up. Lol
