Hello all. Recently moved here from Oregon and am looking to start the process (if I can) of getting my LTC here in TX.

I can’t get a driver's license until September as it is backed up quite a bit. Looking at the process to get a LTC here in TX, it’s a bit more involved than what I had to do in OR so I’d like to start the process of classes, paperwork etc. now if I can.

Do I have to wait on my DL to start this? I emailed the Dept of Public Safety twice but never received an email back. Thank you in advance!

Thank you, but I’ve been there. It isn’t very clear that if I can complete the class now it will count in the future. Based on what I can see, I shouldn’t even start doing anything until I have lived here for 6 months and have a DL.

I moved here from Mississippi last September and wasn't able to get my TX DL until April. I took the class in October, had the LTC by New Years.
There is a process to get one using your Oregon DL. Take an LTC class and get the certificate Form LTC-16. Go online to the DPS firearms website and create an account. You will be able to upload your required documents there. You will need to provide proof of your citizenship, I provided a copy of my Passport. A birth certificate will work too. You will need to get some passport photos taken and snail mail them to Austin. The details are on the website. They use these because normally they use the drivers license photo, but you won't have one yet.
When you create the account with the DPS, you will be directed to schedule a fingerprint session with IdentoGO using service code 119Q91. They will send the fingerprints directly to the DPS. Please see the attachments for guidance

More information on the application process is available at the DPS website under the following link: https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/ltc/applicantreminder.htm
