Proposition 47 was passed in 2014. It didn't "legalize shoplifitng." One of the provisions raised the threshold for felony theft from $450 to $950. Any theft under $950 is still a misdemeanor and subject to arrest and up to 6 months in jail if convicted.

Walgreens stores are leaving San Francisco because of the thefts apparently and people have petitions against Walgreens claiming they should just stay and eat the losses. This is why California is so screwed up because the screwballs elect the people that rule them. Apparently the Proposition was voted in by the screwball population. Go figure. The only hope for California is a massive earthquake. Not enough good folks for a revolution. No ammo either.

    That is true...fwiw.....

It is also true the San Francisco DA won't prosecute misdemeanors + no bail is required from them........

Why would cops even try to arrest them?

    That's right....they don't......

The last statement I saw on this from SFPD was a year ago and they said they were making arrests and presenting cases to the DA.If the DA is now declining to prosecute, (which is apparently now the case) I think I'd blame that on the DA rather than the law or the cops.

Ha, just watched a video tonight showing a thug in a San Fran Walgreens on a bike! Filling his duffel bag by clearing shelves into it. Cop and customer watching and filming as he rides out the door. Wife and I are like "WTF?". Now I understand why.

Most companies that sell retail goods to the public, have a set percentage that they consider loss that is factored into their P/L reports every quarter. Standard operating procedure. By the state raising the minimum from $450 to $950, that raises the loss for many of these companies beyond an acceptable percentage of loss they can absorb and still make a profit.

Now what happens is, the larger chain stores might pull operations out of that state, or that particular area, because it's eating into profits. But what about the smaller retail outlets that can't afford to move and are suffering? Those are going to be the big losers. A larger chain store can absorb the losses much easier than the smaller mom and pop stores by a huge margin.

And the LE officers, they are pretty much between a rock and a hard place with such thresholds being lowered as to what is a felony, and what is a misdemeanor. Why should they expend the time and energy, and possible threat to their own personal safety, to only have the offender kicked loose before the ink is dry on the arrest report?

The prosecutors, and state legislation created this travesty of justice.

    Absolutely...I don't blame the LEO's at all....

Anyone with a brain knew when they passed that particular law what the outcome would be........and they did it on purpose.....imho...

I'm not ok with under $950.00 being a misdemeanor........

    That shit wouldn't fly here.........

IIRC, didn't the DA in Dallas or Tarrant county do something very similar a couple of years ago when he came into office? I have no idea as to who that has worked out and what has become of it either.

Correct. I had to look it up. I was thinking the amount was over $750 and it became a felony.
