IIRC they're supposed to just reject the card if the signature is missing, appears invalid, or does not appear to match. By their merchant terms, they should just not accept that card. But we all know the rules don't matter.

I've been I.D.'d at the grocery store using my CC just by looking dirty after working outside ..... & the little ol white lady in front of me gets a pass when she uses a CC.

    I guess I am a CC worshiper.

Give me that free 2-5% off of every purchase.

Adds up to getting several thousand back at the end of the year.
Just remember that's coming from the merchant you purchased things from, the card processor just takes it out of the merchant payment. Depending on the merchant, that's just great by me.

They can't refuse the transaction if you decline to show ID (at least by the merchant agreement, for some cards).

Mastercard: https://www.mastercard.us/content/dam/mccom/global/documents/mastercard-rules.pdf (page 109, can request but not require ID)

Visa: https://usa.visa.com/dam/VCOM/global/support-legal/documents/five-important-rules-for-merchants.pdf (page 2, exception for the US: a merchant may request ID if they suspect fraud in a face-to-face transaction if they suspect fraud and decline the transaction if the ID is expired or the name does not match the card)

American Express: https://icm.aexp-static.com/content/dam/gms/en_us/optblue/us-mog.pdf (page 20, can require ID like DL or passport if the card is not signed, if signature does not match the merchant must either contact processor or decline transaction)

why would I care where it comes from. If the merchants were smart they would offer a 5% cash discount.

I am 52 and have had multiple CC from the age of 18 or so and I have never signed the back of one and never recall being asked for ID.

So when a 20yo male attempts to pay with a card and the name on the card is "Jennifer Jones" they will let it go through and not suspect fraud?

As a fraud protection measure, I never sign the back of any of the cards I carry. Instead, I write "ASK FOR ID". This is not a foolproof measure of course but adds a bit of rigor.

Have not given a card to a merchant in years. Gas, Lowes, Best Buy, restaurants you name just about any store, you insert card and run transaction. Cashier never sees it.

I like the Shooty McShooty idea best.. It takes away the "Look at me I'm special" if everybody wants to make up a name.

Because you might want to support locally-owned businesses?
