I am wanting to chop down my rem 700 in 308. I called a place near me that does gunsmith work and verbal estimate was 250$. Another place about 40 mins away was 150, which sound much more reasonable. Anyone know of a place with fair pricing that does good work in the san antonio / new braunfels area.
    Thanks

More than likely the barrel will have to be removed to cut down the barrel, and to do the job properly. That means a gunsmith is going to have the proper tools to remove the barrel, and then re-install the barrel and reset the headspace. Not an easy or quick job. Plus to do the job properly the muzzle will need to be re-crowned as well.

Just beware of someone quoting a lower price in this instance.

Ya i am hoping someone here can point me to a reputable gunsmith. I heard some "gunsmiths" have them sent off which increases the price. Which i guess makes sense if you don't have the equipment. Anywho thanks for the reply.

Those guy's are just trying to rip you off. Contact Morgan at Class 3 Machining. He does all of my barrel threading / cutting, and does it right and for a fair price.
You will need to take the barreled action out of the stock, and remove the scope / rings / bases. Also I'd remove the bolt and the trigger assembly.

Morgan can tell you the best way to ship it to him, he's in Wylie,TX., east of Dallas.
I think he charges around $65 to cut and re-crown a barrel.

Any gunsmith worth a grain of salt can cut, thread, and crown a barrel with the action attached to it.

Just make sure you ask some questions of whoever you hire. I'd make sure they are indicating off of the bore of the barrel not just turning the OD of the metal.

Maybe I'm wrong and this only applies to a barrel being threaded.

Not being argumentative but although that's a fairly true statement, it also depends on the machine that the 'smith has at his disposal. If he has an older machine with a long headstock and a short bed he's gonna need to remove the barrel from the action.
Both of my machines that I've owned had pretty large headstocks and I usually needed to pop the barrel off the actions to do the job right especially given that the Clausing didn't have a steady nor was one readily available.
I'm just a hobbyist tho so take this with a grain of salt.
