It's 4:45, 95°, and the humidity is 60%. At least that's what my little weather monitor says. So, it is officially HOT - typical for Texas in late July and August.
I was in the store several days ago, making small talk with the cashier as I checked out, and she commented that it was supposed to get up to 105 on that particular day. I acted surprised, and she said, "well, that's the 'feels like" temperature".
    What the?
I hear it more and more all the time. What is the deal with "feels like" temperature? To me, right now it feels like it's 95 degrees with 60% humidity.
Is this something the new generation invented so they can feel like its hotter than it was when we were kids?
Is it just another way of exaggerating for the "generation of exaggeration"?
Or is it something that the weather forecasting industry invented as hype?
I guess I'm old-school and cranky, but "feels like" temperature FEELS LIKE someone is pissing on my leg and telling me it's raining!

Feels like temperature is the heat index. Exactly the opposite of wind chill factor. Currently my weather station and pickup agree that its 104° at my house and the heat index is 105° because its only 33% humidity. 2 weeks ago it was 97° with a heat index of 105 because of the 60% humidity.

I work outside all day. I couldn't tell you the difference between 95 or 105. Anything over 90 with a measurable amount of humidity sucks. I've seen 128 while in Iraq. To me it still wasn't as bad as here in Texas. Of course that place is a desert so humidity is next to nothing there. The sun is the killer though. Even when it's 80 out.

Thanks. I am familiar with the concept. You are correct, it is the opposite of wind chill. Something that I have learned to take into consideration when riding a motorcycle during the cooler months of the year.
Still, I don't see the need to exaggerate the temperature in winter or summer, and it just seems that is often the case with "feels like".
Let's stick with "heat index" and I'll be happy - and we all know it's all about keeping ME happy!

Heat index is not opposite of wind chill. Wind chill is a measure of air removing heat from an object, like when you blow on hot coffee. The opposite would be air putting heat into an object, which is not heat index.

I just want the temperature. The pipes freeze at 32 real, summer is hot so who cares. Dry heat, wet heat, same. That’s why we have AC.
