My weight loss began with my doctor telling me that my cholesterol was a “little bit high” not dangerous yet, but getting close to the point of troublesome. He first suggested a statin to which I declined. He then gave me option #2, stating I wouldn’t like it, but if I followed it I would be far better off.
I took the second option. Gave up sugar, carbs and fried food and started exercising. Did the trick. Read the article. Ask for alternatives if your doctor wants to put you on a statin for cholesterol.
    Be healthy.

Well, that does it for me. My doctor prescribed Lipitor about a month ago. My cholesterol was not that high, in my opinion. But he said it was enough to increase my risk of stroke or heart attack by 24% in the next 10 years. I don't know where he got that percentage. So, as of today, I'm off Lipitor. It didn't feel right for me from the start.

I took statins for a couple of years. I reached a point that I would wake up in the morning with the muscles in my arms and shoulders aching so bad that I couldn't even make a pot of coffee. I had to take a couple of Tylenol and wait until they kicked in so I could hold a coffee pot. I didn't realize that the statins were causing that.

Then one time I failed to order my medicines on time and ran out of the statin. The pain in the morning went away. When I did get my refills of my medicine, I started taking the statins again and the pain came back.

I quit taking the statins and again the pain went away. I threw the statins in the trash and have refused to take them again, no matter how much my doctor insists that I might need them.

Please talk to your doctor about getting off of them and healthy alternatives to lower cholesterol. I do not know if you can safely just quit taking them or if you have to wean your self off.( another reason to avoid big pharma solutions. Once on them you have to stay and quitting cold turkey can sometimes be more harmful than the condition it is “treating”)

Good for you man. The typical American diet is really nasty these days. People are always suprised how little they have to eat daily once they give up all the processed garbage and fillers

Thank you for sharing this article. I refused statins from my doctor for the last few years due to research I had done. The doctor did not know about some of the studies and at one point told me that all the research pointed to statins being no health risk. I started a heavy weight loss program several years ago and went from 290 to 120 I have to admit, I ahve not dropped more but should drop another 20.

290# to 120# is mostly likely not healthy either.

If you're diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic, the American Diabetes Association guidelines say that you must be on a statin. Period. No matter what your lipid panels look like, doctors who treat diabetes are supposed to give a statin to all their Type 2 patients without exception.

My lipid panels, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, would have made a marathon runner envious. They're still great. But doc insists that I take a statin.

I've been ambivalent about it in the past.

Recent events have changed my thinking. I really need to get off all prescription meds. For reasons I won't get into here, I really want to ashcan them all. Over time, I've lost over 350 pounds and I've got another 100 to go but I've been stalled for too long. I've recently re-dedicated myself to my health goals.

When my blood glucose is controlled by diet and exercise only, I'll joyfully stop taking several meds, especially the statins.

My health totally sucks. I've been taking insulin for years now... I think I've trashed my pancreas. Once read a book (Death to Diabetes) about a guy that got off insulin as a type II but no doctor supports that that I know of...

    @Hoji

How/what did you do when you started your exercise program?

I need to lose about 60lbs and had foot surgery earlier this (Edit: last year) year so that I could start walking again... just need to make myself do it.

... just need to make myself do it.

I’m sure Hoji will chime in, but that statement there is all about the give-a-shit factor. Walk. Ride a bike. Swim. Build up to 30mims a day every day. If you don’t give-a-shit enough to become active in some way, none of the below will help.

Food. If you’re starting with raw ingredients, it’s pretty easy to control how healthy it is. I personally subscribe to smaller main meal sizes and a simple snack in between, something like celery and peanut butter. Bread, flour tortillas, cereals, rice, pasta all break down to carb, which is sugar. Beans, green vegetables are good.

Drinks. The closer to water it is, the better off you are. Anything sweetened (even the zero calorie stuff) needs to go. Yup, even tea needs to be unsweetened. We try to always be sipping on water or tea until dinner. It’s amazing how full you feel and how much better you feel when hydrated appropriately.

Mental strength. Much like watching grass grow or water boil, it takes a long time for weight to drop. Simply reducing calorie intake won’t help a lot…your body will acclimatize to the reduced intake and burn less to maintain; that’s where the activity kicks in a forces the body to burn more. A good goal is 1lb/week. The freaky party is you’ll drop the most weight early on; when your body gets super efficient, you’ll plateau and have to kick up the activity to keep burning.

I’ll be 40 in September and despite my long history of being active, our food supply is poison.

My cholesterol was bad high and the first thing I did was give up fast food. Not just burgers. Anything fast food. I’m still guilty of walking into a bucees and buying stuff I don’t need.

Im currently not eating bread and I feel better. Be careful of canned foods. We eat so much food that has a mile long list of ingredients.
