I asked this question in one of Krieger's deleted threads. It may not be of interest to many, but I rate NV as a serious threat to my position in a WROL or SHTF situation. Anybody using NV to navigate my property is an enemy.

I'm rural, isolated, and alone. My best defense is that few know my situation, but a lot of that could be overcome by using Maps and GPS. My house and property is largely indefensible. My best bet under any attack would be to use my better knowledge of my situation to counter attack. One of my chief concerns is that any attack might come at night with the attackers fully equipped with NV.

I've looked into night vision quite a bit, but am certainly no expert, since I have no experience. I find all NV that seems really useful to be well beyond my means, therefore, my focus shifts to how to decrease the effectiveness of my attackers night vision.

I wonder if flooding the area around my house with IR is a any defense?

I already have four security cameras, and a number of motion activated driveway alarms to notify me of intrusion; the security cameras emit IR at night...

I'm thinking other IR emitters, some remote controlled, and trail cams in the same positions as my driveway alarms might serve to confuse attackers, giving me that extra second.

Anybody have any thoughts other than that I am paranoid?

When do you plan on sleeping?
If I thought things had got bad enough, I would stop sleeping in my house, or at least there irregularly, and vary the location where I slept and when, except that it would generally be close to where my livestock are penned. I have a battery powered receiver for my driveway alarms that I can carry with me to notify me of trespassers wherever I am.

You call your family livestock and keep them penned?
If I had any family, I wouldn't have said I was alone... It's just me, the dog, cat, sheep and goats. Neighbors are within walking distance, not in sight, but mostly older and less mobile than I am.

    That's what claymores are for.

If you’re getting “attacked” by people with NV......things are already pretty bad. A lot of people whose NV on the regular also use thermal soooo.........go hide in deep dark cave.
I realize things would be bad if attackers were using NV, but lots of people have NV and even thermal these days and who would attack at night without it? Seems to me like it has much more use for offense than defense...

Krieger was getting into it's offensive uses when his thread was deleted. I thought he might have the best ideas about how to defend against it also.

Part of that reference might have been that if you go active-IR and your adversary is rockin' a passive-IR/Thermal stack - you're going to give away your position to any unfriendlies with passive-IR (e.g. modern NV), and the IR light will have no effect on the thermal whatsoever, other than generating heat at the source...

This is actually not a topic I'm all that comfortable contributing much more to [in a public thread], but feel free to PM if you want more info (disclaimer: personal opinion only).

The likelihood of the average jackass who b&e’s in rural areas at night being intelligent and resourceful enough to utilize some type of NOD is low.

NODs are agnostic of defensive or offensive tactics. If you believe it’s a realistic threat, then how do you level the playing field? Persistent white light. Light the exterior up like a football stadium. What’s that song…Blinded by the Light…the key is having that light show trigger in time for you to take advantage of the surprise you’ve just generated.

I do actually have several led panel floodlights set up with remote controls to throw light on my livestock when the dog warns me of some threat. I guess I need to add more; they can all be programmed to the same remote if that becomes necessary.

They work pretty well and the cost isn't prohibitive, but they do run on 120v. Not that they can't be run from an independent battery/inverter or from my house battery backup/inverter as long as that system remains functional.

The problem I have with white light is once that second of advantage is past, I'm left with it's effects on my own natural night vision and I lose some of the advantage of knowing my place in the dark, but especially if the attacker is using thermal, white light might be my best bet.

Like many others, this is really a subject I know little about...
