I’ve had good Rudy’s and I’ve had some really bad Rudy’s. I do love their sauces, and their breakfast tacos are really good. There’s one in Spring I used to go to once in a while, and it was always pretty good, never great, but good. I went to one in San Antonio once, and it was literally inedible. We were staying at a hotel in the area, and ordered it and brought it back to the room. Took a few bites, and threw it in the trash. Ended up driving across the street and getting McDonalds!!!!

Mine always seems to have a heavy thumb. Never asmidge under what I order, but always about 1/4 pound over. Other than that it is OK for drive through BBQ.

    Very welcome.

If you're coming down may as well stop by Lockhart and check out Black's, Smitty's and Kreuz bbq joints. Whole new argument there.
Chisholm Trail Bbq was great the few times that I've been there too. Riley's Bbq across the street from it sucked the time I went.

It's not terrible, but I don't even rank them at the top of chain BBQ places. Once you've eaten the good stuff, then that "steam table and drown it in sauce" stuff just doesn't do the trick. When my kid was little, we had to stop at McDonalds. When my M-i-L was alive, we sometimes met the in-laws at Rudy's ('cause if they were buying, it had to be the cheapest place and it had to be within 100 yards of the freeway exit). I don't stop at either place now, but I could stop if it was the only place open and I was really starving. Maybe.

Their moist brisket is OK. Chopped brisket better. If your chopped is better than the sliced that is telling imo. I'm usually not a side person when it comes to bbq. I think sides are filler that keep me from eating more bbq. But like Ben said. Their cream corn is legit. I do like their pig in the blankets when vendors bring them to work.

I think I ate at one of them in SA years ago on the east side loop. Never been a big fan of Chain BBQ places, most of the time it's not any better than a hamburger from a chain restaurant.

Didn't know they had 4 to start. I grew up near the Leon Springs location and even worked a summer job there in HS. I was always told it was the original. Either way I like eating there. Met several of the Spurs team there also. David Robinson and Tim Ducan were regulars.

The Leon Springs store is the no-kidding original location. The other 3 in SAT came later. Between that location and The Grill at Leon Springs (burned down earlier this year) in their heyday, you could expect to run into any number of the Spurs on just about any given day.

That was a long time ago.

    Out here by the lake!
Never ate at a Rudy’s. Never thought Creamed Corn as a BBQ side. The wife never wanted to go out for BBQ. When I met her I had a smoker. When we moved into the first house I had a gas grill and eventually stopped cooking outside.

New house I bought the Kamado and we eat more things off it then anything. Not sure I would bother stopping for BBQ unless in Lockhart!

The grill burned down again? I remember it burned down before. I want to say around 2000? That's a shame.

Yeah. Back in May. Don’t know if they will build back again, the building has large holes all over it now.

We like Rudy’s alright. Pretty good for not standing in line for 2 hours. I‘ve had Franklin‘s once. Didn’t have to stand in line. My boss brought it in for a team meeting. OMG! I may have made a bit of a pig of myself. Been disappointed both times at Stiles Switch.

I guess the Rudy's in Tyler is one of the originals as I never noticed a breakfast menu. DW and I eat there every time we go to Tyler, their stuffed tater is really good and filling. Unfortunately we only eat there about every 6 weeks, usually because of Dr's appointments there.
I have been here near Tyler for 5 years now and been meaning to go to Rudy's. I have tried most of the BBQ places in and around Tyler and have yet to find one that is consistent/good. Stanley's is overrated and most of the other places are hit and miss; my guess is that it is hard to keep good staff unless you are the owner/cook/manager yourself.

Some of the best BBQ I have had has been at Spring Creek, but I have also been served yesterday's meat there more than once. Smoke Monkey out in Flint had killer brisket and pulled pork, but the original pitmaster must have moved on because it is poor quality now.

I guess I will try out Rudy's since it seems to be getting a decent level of reviews here.
