That motorist said he was ticketed for going three to four miles per hour over the speed limit in a school zone, and when he was going 83 in an 80 mph zone.

I have never seen a a 80 mph speed sign and I lived here since 1979.

I hate to be the first one here to sound like a dick, but there shouldn't be any problem as long as you follow the traffic laws.
I got a ticket at one of the speed traps in Austin once. You know why they pulled me over? Because I was speeding!
I was polite, took my lumps, paid the fine, and watched my ass a little more carefully after that. My fault - no harm, no foul.

I understand that from time to time there are gonna be exceptions to this, but I think the majority of it is just people not paying attention to how they drive.

Yeah. I call BS on that too. I've been here my whole life (except for the 90's when I decided to wear green for eight years), and I've never even heard of an 80MPH zone.
I'm not saying it can't exist somewhere. But I've never seen or heard of it.

Uh, guys.....80 mph signs are all over the place out in West Texas. Don't remember all the guidelines, but essentially wide-open places allow it, such as IH-10 just west of Kerrville. Seen 'em with my own two eyes.

Good to know. I was really starting to think the article was BS. I don't ever get out to west Texas, so I had no idea before you said that.

Yall callin BS on something again.
People, damn near every stretch of HWY I travel around here is 80 MPH. Most 2 lanes are 75MPH.
Giving tickets to people for speeding is not an issue for me. Those sudden reduction in speed signs with that damn camera junk right there is what pisses me off.
Have none of yall noticed those spots. Most speed reduction places around here have a sign that say's " Warning, reduce speed ahead". I have seen places in Texas that didnt have the warning sign and it seems to me places like houston and austin do that on purpose.
They put cameras on all the redlights around here 4 or 5 years ago. That became a hot issue with people and photo tickets. "That shit dont fly around here because the west side of the state is mostly conservative". Those redlight cameras are only used for investigating accidents.
Speeding in a school zone? Do that and I hope you burst into flames. When you get out of the school zone of course. :deadhorse:

    True.
If I had actually spent an extra couple of seconds and looked online (as I eventually did), I would have seen those 75 and 80mph zones in west Texas.
But instead, I just typed in my assumption and made an ass out of myself.

Well - live and learn. I never claimed to be perfect, but if I had - I'd be wrong about that too. ;)

The guy who wrote that story is very uninformed. The cities that write the most citations still generate less that 5% of their income from fines.

Most cities generate less than 1% of their income from fines of ANY type.

The story is pandering to a crowd that already has their mind made up.

West of San Antonio on IH10 the speed limit is 80. I don't know where else it is.

As far as that tinfoil hat site goes... it's full of people who got caught SPEEDING and got a damn ticket. WOW - imagine that! I looked at the so called speed traps they have listed for the areas I drive in daily (about 300 - 350 miles a day) and almost none of them were places I had ever even seen a cop.

The internet opens up the world for a whole new breed of idiot.

Whats sad is people still cant drive the limit in those zones. Either they speed or wont get out of the way. I think the "wont get out of my damn way" people suck worse than the speeders.

Agreed. It sucks that a lot of careless drivers have forced the cops here to make so many damn speedtraps.

Well, that's not quite the way it goes in the Houston area. The speed traps are not there because careless drivers became too much of a problem. Trust me, careless drivers are all over Harris and Montgomery counties, but the speed traps tend to be concentrated in certain areas. For example, an incorporated area called Jersey Village, on the west side of Houston around US-290, has been a notorious speed trap since long before I started driving 30 years ago. It's not that the drivers there are any worse, it's just an area where you know you'll get a ticket for just about anything they can get you on. Going up north on I-45 between F.M. 2920 and Conroe you'll go through little incorporateds like Panorama Village, Oak Ridge North, and Shenandoah - places that seem to exist for the sole purpose of writing tickets.

The thing that pisses me off is that you have cops on the freeway looking to pop you for 60 in a 55, yet on streets like Spring Cypress you have people driving like it's a damn NASCAR race, typically 55-60 in a 45 mph zone, and the cops don't seem to mind. At least I sure haven't seen them do much about it. I drive the section between 249 and I-45 all the time and I'll almost always see packs of 10-20 cars bunched together, swapping lanes constantly and riding about an inch off your bumper - I wasn't really exaggerating with the NASCAR comparison. Red light runners are a given - I see several a day at the intersections of Champion Forest / Spring Cypress and Champion Forest / Louetta. Not by a little bit - I'm looking at 5 seconds of green then see someone flying through the red from another direction.

There's a reason I'm being so specific about locations that last paragraph - I'd really like to find out how I can go about getting HCSO, Precinct 4 or TXDPS troopers to own that road for a while and nail these idiots. I'm no prude about speed, believe me, but Spring Cypress is just ridiculous. If someone wants to write tickets, that area is a gold mine and really needs some attention.

Y'all realize that a speedometer isn't accurate within 3 miles an hour at 80, right?

3 over is a complete BS ticket.

Yeah, I was going to say - I-10 between SA and El Paso.

Definitly in west Texas. I take highway 176 aka Andrews highway when I break off of I20 towards a small town in NM when my wife and I visit her parents. It's 80 on much of that stretch. Hell, there's areas without fences or telephone polls, and you might get lucky to see a car drive by.

this is why there is so many crosses posted on spring cypress more than a few people ive known hace died on that road, either they were speeding or someone else was and i live right off louetta champions forest so i know exactly what you mean by the horrible drivers here.

That's new. Last I heard it was 75mph west of Odessa on I-20 and somewhere near Ft. Stockton on I-10.
