I spent the first part of my life as a violent street rat. Later, as I got clean & sober, I learned to avoid the places where violence occurred and WHOA......I managed to stay out of the violence. Being out on the streets at 2 or 3 am puts you at risk regardless of WHY you're out there. Those poor folks in the boat tempted fate and lost the bet. They knew the area was dangerous but they went anyway. They didn't deserve what they got but the end result was predictable.

I'd like to find a way to bait those pirate scumbags in close, kill them all, tie rocks to the bodies, throw them overboard, sink their boat.....and set up for the next set of pirate scumbag victims.

Maybe use a drifting worthless scow to get them to 'investigate' and then stick the equivalent of a limpet mine to the hull of their boat.

Twenty thousand leagues under the sea comes to mind, when Nemo would rip the bottom out of the victim's boat and sink them. Sir, have you ever crawled out from under your California rock and seen the rest of the World outside of Cali and Texas?

Americans do good all over the Globe; some may exercise poor judgment, but if their good intentions lead to their demise, why should we condemn them?

As for other Americans abroad, many traveled there before the troubles began, without prior reason to expect trouble. (When did the State Department issue travel advisories for Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt)? Why should American citizens be condemned as "Stupid" when they are stuck in a place where they can't get out of?

We pay our military to protect American Citizens, wherever they might be!

Strong men stand ready so that we might sleep safely at home, and they are paid (far less than they deserve) to defend Americans anywhere they are threatened. It did not cost one dollar more for SEALS to whack some pirates, than it did for them to train for combat.

It is a fixed cost, not like calling a plumber in the middle of the night to dislodge a turd stuck in your toilet.

We don't charge extra for holidays, weekends, or after 5:00 pm.

Skeeter, I gotta run with you on this one. In years past, stupid people simply found their demise and that was it. Now, we must waste our resources protecting dumb asses from their own stupidity. The loss of those lives was entirely predictable. It's like driving south on I-45. Sooner or later you WILL drive into the Gulf of Mexico. The end result is sure. I see no reason why we should expend our national resources to get in a twist over it.

That being said, a similar sized boat filled with 50 TGT members armed with AR's, AK's and other utensils the members were skilled with could bait the bastards into a fight where the result would also be predictable. I am old and can't march very well but I can darn sure shoot. Please sign me up.

It is not STUPID to follow your conscience in the face of evil. These were Catholic Missionaries, and far more like-minded missionaries have been murdered in our Hemisphere, than in pirate-infested waters off the coast of Somalia (Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, etc).

These people were on a long-term mission, and knew well the risk of sailing into dangerous waters. They did it for years.

They never expected rescue from any other than their Lord should they run into difficulty.

They believed in a compassionate Lord, as opposed to an Allah that commands his Pirates to do evil.

They chose THAT route because one of their members needed urgent medical care and it was the shortest route to Europe.

They trusted their faith to see them through. That does not make them STUPID. It simply testifies to their faith.

It was neither flawed logic on their behalf, nor flawed logic on my behalf to comment thereupon.

It was a risk assessed, and in the end it cost them their lives, and the U.S. Navy whacked and captured the rest of the Pirates.

Sadly, the "politically correct" result was to hold the surviving pirates for trial, when they should have been summarily executed under International Maritime Law, and thrown overboard to be eaten by sharks.

Go to an ATM, at night, all alone, in any town or city and see what that brings; now that is STUPID.

To condemn these Missionaries as stupid is an insult to their good works in the years before they were murdered.

Thanks to the SEALS that whacked and captured the Pirates; sadly their rules of engagement ruled out the killing of surviving pirates.

THAT will cost us more in incarceration and legal representation than we should have to bear.

very well stated Sir Shortround and i understand what you're saying. so i'll concede and say their "Decision" to sail there was not very smart and they paid a GRAVE price for it. and Religious or not, it was not a very intelligent move. and as far as the atm at night for me, i'd like to see an attacker try and get past a hollowpoint .45 round!!
