7mm Rem. Mag will reach out and kill an elk at very long distances. I have a two cousins and an uncle that two of them use the 7mm R.M. in Colorado for elk hunting. Many times they have brought home elk from their hunting trips.

I much prefer my own 7mm R.M. to the 300, and 338 Win. Mags I use to own and shoot.

A 30-06, with the right ammo, and using some hunting skills, can, and has killed just about everything for over a hundred years.

Lots of 300 WM ammo around. Go with the Bergara. When I was looking at 6.5 CM rifles, the Bergara had the smoothest action of the dozen or so rifles I fondled.

I will second the 7mm rem mag. It’s a great caliber. In hinds sight I wish I would have gotten the Remington mag instead of weatherby mag

I have owned the 7mm Wthby Mag in the past. Awesome round. Problem is, it's more suited to reloaders if shooting one a lot. Factory ammo is much more expensive than most 7mm R.M. ammo.

Thats my only complaint about the weatherby round.

I've been at odds with myself. I'm trying to decide between a new blot action rifle for hunting and long range shooting. I'm fairly new to hunting, but I've been shooting long range for about a year now. I have a Savage Axis in .308, but I've been wanting to step it up to a caliber that can really reach out and touch something like an Elk at 600 plus yards and still have enough knockdown power to get a clean kill. I've been looking and several different rifles in 300 win mag, 300 PRC, 7MM, and 6.8 western. The rifles in question are the Browning Xbolt speed, Weatherby Vanguard, Bergara B14 Wilderness, and the Christensen Mesa. Budget is around $1500/$1600 so I was thinking $1000-1200 for the rifle, and $500-$300 for a scope. Let me know you opinions.
The 300 or 6.5 PRC would be the right direction. Elk are big and tough, 600-700lbs walking. A DRT shot is hard enough at 300 yards much less 600.

The 6.8 Western has ammo available but I haven’t seen the rifle yet. I personally use a 7mmRM, and limit my shots to 300yds. Another option to consider is the 280AI or 28 Nosler.

I love and collect modern bolt action rifles, I have many of the calibers mentioned and will give you my opinions. That being said these are my opinions not facts. I have a Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag which was my favorite gun for a long time. I still love it. It is stainless finish and I upgraded the stock with a Boyds Gray Laminate stock. I love that look. I used it on everything including Elk, Black Bear, and many deer. It is a bit heavy for deer but it eliminates tracking. A few years back I got a Savage 110 6.5 Creedmore. Since then it has been my go to deer rifle. It is flat shooting and a tack driver out to 500 yards( longest I have shot it). Recently I bought a Mossberg Patriot in 6.5 PRC. This rifle has a great trigger. This was my first in the new PRC cartridges and I have to say I am very impressed. I would love to try a 300 PRC based on this.. I am not someone who rules out a rifle because it is a good buy, or the cartridge does not have 40 years of history. With your budget you have lots of choices for a great gun that will fit your needs.

Do you do much shooting at those ranges? You start having to get pretty good at correcting for windage by the time you start sending boolits out that far.

My vote would be for 7mm mag, but 7mm-08, 300WM or other high BC/SD rounds like 6.5CM would work too.

    In the woods...
I took a gemsbok in 2003 with a 7mm RemIngton Magnum. It was a guided cull hunt of TPWD land, guided by a TPWD biologist. It was far from a canned hunt and we stalked and scouted for two days.
On the morning of the third day I got a chance at an older female gemsbok, at about 60 yards in some pretty thick brush. I shot her just behind the shoulder and she piled up about 25 yds from the shot. The exit wound and blood trail were impressive.
I also took a Remington 30/06 with me, just in case I had issues with the 7 mag rifle or scope.
For that particular hunt, IIRC, .308 Winchester was the minimal caliber allowed for the hunt, per TPWD guidelines.
This particular post may not be relevant, but it gave me an opportunity to tell the story, nevertheless.

If you wanna be budget minded when it comes to ammo steer clear of 300PRC and 6.8 western. 300 PRC is almost impossible to find and 6.8 hasn’t made it into most stores yet. I have all 4 and if your looking for a 1 does all I’d probably say the 7mm on a budget friendly mindset. However that 6.8 sure is a sweet shooter lol

My favorite LR Hunting cartridge is without a doubt the 7STW. For one thing, it shoots probably the best LR bullet made, the 7mm.

My buddy bought mine when I had to give up hunting & rifle shooting but he's thinking about selling it. It doesn't even have a total 100 rounds through it. It's a Rem 700 SS 7STW all factory with a HS Precision stock on it, an amazing firearm!

You should read up about the STW!

I was very big on buying a Bergara when looking to buy a 22-250, but the Weatherby was more in my price range, and I don't regret it. Research the ballistics on the type of round you want for the range. I like the 6mm Creedmoor for 500-600 yards range, but I don't think of my RPR as a hunting rifle.
