    i have a old smith & wesson pistol that was handed down thru the family. i was wondering if anyone has heard of this gun and what it might be worth. its a .44 special ctg hand ejector. i think its a 1st model triple lock or 4 screw. ser #23xxx. thanks for any help. i will try to post a pic.

    Can't tell much from that side and the serial number does not make much sense.

    Can you show a pic of the other side and where did you find the numbers?

    From what is shown it looks like a 44 S&W Special Hand Ejector 2nd. Model made between 1915 and 1917.

    thanks for the info jar. i will take a pic of the other side in the next couple of days. on the serial number i blocked out the last 3 numbers. from what i could find out the first 2 numbers told when it was made.

    Where on the handgun did you find those numbers? Were they from the butt of the grip?

    I would have agreed with JAR. Second model hand ejector. Show the other side to see if it is a triple lock.

    My problem is the serial number. The serial number given would have been made in 1925 which is right at the end of the Second Model Hand Ejector. If the serial number is correct then it was one of the last runs of the Second Model.

    I have seen to many mistakes made on serial numbers for assembly numbers or error reading it to trust just that. That is why I asked about the picture to look for the lock.

    Yup. That is why I asked where the numbers were imprinted. Folk very often confuse assembly numbers for serial numbers.

    Of course today, I imagine assembly numbers are just a thing of the past. :(
