Ok I’ve been frequenting my local pawn shop hoping to score a revolver, but for the past couple of weeks I‘ve noticed this Marlin 30-30 sitting unsold. Asking price is $500, but I really think if I offer $450 or $475 cash OTD they might take it. Seems in decent shape, but the only concern is the stock was tapped for a sling swivel but there are no swivels present on the rifle. I’m not a hunter, and to be honest, it would just be for plinking. Ya, I know. Stupid waste on expensive ammo, but I like lever action. I’m kind of thinking this might be an okay deal, but wanted some other opinions. Really, I don’t want a drawn out thread, so let’s cut it off by Oct 22nd. I will have made a decision by that time

If it's in good condition,I would think a JM Marlin is worth every bit of $500+.

Great feedback, thanks. So the holes in the stock for the sling swivels aren’t a ding on the value? Forgot to mention it is a model 336

That’s kind of what I’ve seen. One thing I did not notice is whether it has the cross bolt safety or not. I need to go back out there and take a closer look at it. I’m assuming that if not, then it’s more desirable
Honestly, we are at the point where any JM > any non-JM. No crossbolt might make it more desirable to some but for $500 you better go grab it while you can. If not and its somewhere in DFW area, let me know and I will solve this problem for ya

To be honest I already have a 1973 Glenfield model 30 that I picked up cheap and it’s near perfect. If I do get the Marlin, I may shoot it a bit but prob put it up for trade/partial trade on a revolver. Really, I’m not much of a rifle guy, but I sort of have an idea on the worth of some of the older models. FWIW, this is the same pawn shop I picked up a 4” Smith & Wesson 66-1 for $450 OTD a few months ago. I don’t think it was fired more than a couple hundred round because there is barely a ring on the cylinder.

Yep definitely get it then. Youll end up making a few hundred dollars that you can use towards that revolver in a trade

You're doing well finding any levergun for 500 or less these days. It being a JM is a huge bonus. I'm with everyone else and say definitely get it. You certainly won't lose on it if you decide to get rid of it.

I listed a really clean one for $600 a while back and had people bearing down my door to get it. It hurt to let it go, but I really needed to downsize some.

I had a JM 45-70 listed at $750 last year. Gave TGT first shot at it. No bites so I sold it to a coworker who jumped on it.

I would have taken it. 45-70 is going to be my next rifle. Saving for it now. That was a great price.

Does it have a safety? This is kind of important for overall value.
that being said, I would not hesitate for a minute on a JM 30-30 @ $500
Ok so I went there this morning with money in my pocket to take a closer look at it. Once I had it in hand, it wasn’t as nice as it appeared to be on the rack. If this was a car, I have believe it would be referred to as a 10 footer. It does not have the safety, and what I earlier thought was a swivel hole is actually a bullseye stock, and they only put those on their walnut stocks. I thought it was a plug of some sort but my 5 minute post-inspection research says it’s supposed to be that way. It does have some light surface rust on the receiver and barrel, which is easy enough to remove and I would have been okay with that. What turned me off though is between the barrel and tube there was some heavier rust in a couple of areas and not sure if I would be able to remove it and have it still look presentable. There was also some heavier rust along the top of the barrel where the Marlin manufacturing wording is. Not a lot but enough to bother me. The stock had one cross grain scratch but otherwise ok. It had some handling impressions probably from bumps but I think those could be steamed out. The trigger is gold colored so probably brass and the wood is darker that other 336 I’ve seen. Guy at the pawn shop went down to $400, but I passed on it
