Set up a plastic ammo can with my
    Lee hand press
    338 federal dies
    Shell holder
    Calipers
    40 pieces of 308 brass
    My hand primer
    And one sleeve of primers

My goal is to prep some brass to work up a 338 federal load.

I'll be working on them during my lunch break tomorrow.

Have some .308 brass in the tumbler. Can’t get any factory ammo to group worth a damn out of the Savage Axis I have, so I’m gonna try some hand loads with some 165 grain SST’s and some CFE223.

Yup, I had the same issue with mine but in .270.
You are on the right track because AXIS barrels "can be" more accurate with consistent (slightly reduced) hand loads.
I recommend you start in the middle of the load and work your way up since the rule of 70 did not apply for mine.

    Good luck.

    ETA
When I say the middle, here is an example:
If the load range for the powder is 30 gr min and 40 gr max, start at 35 grains and work your way up.
Make 6 with 35 gr, 6 with 36 gr, 6 with 37 gr, and check for groups on separate targets.
Pick the best group, then perfect the load to the 10'th of a grain.

What an amazing change! With 12 different types and weights of factory ammo, the rifle shot anywhere from 3 MOA to barely hitting the paper with 2 consecutive shots! With my hand loads, it’s subMOA! I loaded up 6 different weights from 45 grains to 47.5. This pic is 46 (just about right in the middle of the recommended loads). They all shot pretty well, but this was probably one of the best. Not great, but considering it’s a cheap hunting rifle, and I was just about to scrap the whole damn rifle, and just keep the action, it’s fantastic!

Yes sir. I echo your experience. Write that pet load down behind the recoil pad on the buttstock or in your notes. That way, you always know the recipe for that rifle.

Coming off the success of getting my Savage Axis .308 to shoot like my other Savage rifles, I’ve loaded up some 150 grain Hornady Interlock Soft Points with some Shooters World Precission powder. Probably should have been happy with my results using the165 grain SST’s, but if I had a choice, I’d rather use the Interlock SP’s. Hopefully I’ll get some more good results. Either way, I have an excuse to go to the range again!

    Purdy!
There's something about the look of the Hornady orange-tip SPBT stuck in the mouth of a shiny newly loaded casing. Oof, love 'em!
Are those Sierra MKs on the right?

    How's your cough today? :D
We need range report. With pictures of marked-up targets.

Fine tuning some 30.06 loads using Superformance powder. Hornady book has max load at 61.4 grains. Groups were just starting to really tighten up at 61 grains, which is where I stopped. No pressure signs at all. Gonna go back Monday and try some at 61.4, 61.7, and 62, and see how they look.

I'm in the process (slowly) of inventorying all my RCBS loading equipment. When I get it done, I'm going to put it up for sale here. It will take me a few weeks (two or three) but it will be inexpensive compared to the new stuff on the market. I don't shoot much or reload much anymore.

    Tyler "suburbs"... :)

I just looked, and realized how many projectiles in the 115, 124, and 158gr variety I am going to be moving with... not to mention the 95-100gr, and the 147gr odds and ends... AND 40, 55, 62, and 75 grainers...

109lbs, just for my last Acme order last year, then the X-treme's I got on a Veteran's Day sale a few years back...
OMFG, my back is going to HATE me, ALMOST as much as the USPS gal does!!!

Met a fellow TGTer this morning and gave him some components. Then came home and finished sizing 1150 9mm. Tonigh I'll prime half and get the press setup for a run of SD rounds.

Broke my 338 federal sizing die this week.

Sizing 308 cases to 338 federal. It takes a bit more effort with the expander, well a berdan case snuck it's way into my once fired brass. Snapped the depriving pin and bent the stud the expander screws onto.

New stem ordered from RCBS cost me $18 shipped

Cases came out of the corn cob media looking beautiful. Read somewhere here that used dryer sheets keep the dust down and help with the shine. I've also started squirting a little goof off into the vibrator before the lid goes on.
