It's an all steel Colt. You can't wear it out with a few rounds to break it in.
Iff'n my PeePaw had given me a Colt 1911 I wouldn't of cared if it had purple grips.
A quality pair of stags or bone make it unique and he will be thrilled to receive it. Don't forget a nice holster too! El Paso Saddlery makes some beautiful 1911 holsters.
I wished my grandfather had brought a couple of 1911's back from his tour in Europe during WW2.

I too second the recommendation of stag or bone grips. Even some faux ivory would be classy as well.
    Thank you for the welcome!

I get it, I'm a member of several forums and have seen exactly what you're talking about - all good!

Like I mentioned, its not for sale, I was just trying to start a conversation..
Just wanted you to understand some of the apprehension of the comments some might have made towards you.

Glad to have you join up, and a really nice looking 1911! Your grandson will proud to own it one day.

That, would be a really nice keepsake!

Possibly.. I'll have to put some thought into it!

I do, and I re-read my first post and see how other could have taken it that way. No harm / no foul!

Thanks again and I think so too!

Grips are one of the changes that can be put back to original, and not affect it's value, as long as you retain the original grips. Also retain the box, and all paperwork. Those at some point in the future will increase the value of the pistol.

Don’t get it appraised at a gun dealer, that’s like getting trade in value at a car dealer. Gun blue book values are worthless. What the current value of your gun is is determined by the market and what people are willing to pay for it. Do your due diligence and look at what colt 1911 prices are on listings here, texasguntrader, gb, online retailers to name a few. I can tell you colt 1911s including basic 01991 government models are going for $1200+. Show me a Colt 1911 selling for $800 and I’ll buy it now.

You currently have an incredibly hard to find gun right now, so it’s current market price is at a premium.

If you tell the dealer it's for an appraisal for insurance purpose it's a whole circumstance!

I would say leave it the way you have left it all these years. Opening a time capsule gun is really cool! My M-16A2 was a time capsule. The only thing you could add would ne information from when it theft Colt. I have a FOIA for my M-16 that really helps tell the story.

My dad claimed he had a set of 1911 that he procured during WWII. His best friend robbed his foot locker & lost them in a card game! I had an uncle who had a gas station with mechanics shop in the midwest. He took many a bring back in on trade for work done on a former GI's vehicle that broke down heading west!

As a "kinda" 1911 fan, I'd say a true fair value would be $8-900 uf the buyer is reasonably knowledgeable. I'd also opine that finding a pair of REAL ivory grips would set that gun off nicely. I've got both stag and ivory grips, and while I love the stag, nothing sets off a nicely blued 1911 like ivory. Hell - it even looks purty good on SS w/the right gun, IMO.

Awful ignorant to say BB values are WORTHLESS. They are not the end all be all but they are a valid data point to consider. In the end, the market will decide but having more info is better than having less when dealing with the jackals of the gun world.

^ Real good info right there. If you want to know the market value, you have to watch the market - as in see what the penny start auctions final sale price on Gunbroker end up as.

And awful stupid to even use gun blue book at all when current market data is so readily and easily available. Current market price is determined by the laws of supply and demand. Those willing to buy at a certain price point will, and those who are not won’t.

ANY data point can provide useful references, whether you agree with them or not. Yes, there's a ton of other sources to look at - but when you're walking through a gun show and see something really unusual, being able to call a buddy and get some idea of its' history and potential value can be priceless....and online sources won't always have some of the more unusual guns.
