TX income tax referendum was 75% Nea, 25% Yea, last time it came up a couple years ago. At the time I thought "Who in the Hell would vote for more taxation?". Apparently, they are out there. One of the reasons we moved here was the absence of a state income tax. Our tax liability is much lower here. People don't know what they don't know. There are plenty of states out there that employ income AND property taxes (and any other tax they can think of).
I was speaking with a coworker about state income tax. I paid plenty of it in CA.

His comment was " yeah But it was only like... $900 a year right?"

Yeah right, more like $10-15k a year.

And don't get me started with the state sending you a 1099 for your previous years return. A refund is not income.

I was living and working in California when jimmah carter was Pres. Between the fed and state taxes, I worked Monday, Tuesday, and half of Wednesday to pay all the income taxes. How wonderful it was of them to let me have some of my earnings. As soon as I could afford it I got out of there and never will go back even for a visit. Property taxes we can live with.

I got tired of the same “but you’ll pay more in Texas property taxes” argument long ago, so I don’t even try anymore.

Compared to the state income tax we paid in CA, we’re miles ahead.

Too bad everyone running for office is a politician…or they quickly become one.

    That’s the real problem.

I prefer shifting from the property tax to a sales tax for a variety of reasons. First, it spreads the tax burden out. Illegal aliens, tourists, people who live rent-free....they'll pay that tax. Property owners and renters who shop around can significantly reduce their tax burden with no property tax....putting more money in their pockets that they don't necessarily have to spend on sales tax. And sales tax is a more voluntary tax that encourages people to evaluate their purchases and shop for better deals....lower price on a good = lower sales tax on that good.

Right now, West is my preference....with Huffhines a close second. If neither of them end up on the general election ballot, I'm not wasting my vote....

Washington still does not have a general income tax for individuals, but they have IIRC an 11% sales tax that doesn't apply to groceries and hygiene products.
It's not for lack of trying. They have more than once put up an initiative to bring in a state income tax. Why would anyone vote for it, someone asked?

Let me give you an example of how they do this: They wrote the law to say that there would be a measurable reduction in your property taxes, if passed. I was walking by a store one day and a guy at a table is yelling "sign this petition (signatures needed for initiatives to get on ballot). and get your property taxes reduced!" Sounds good. I walk up and read the text. It's the income tax bill. I said quite loudly: "This is an initiative to create an income tax. Tell people the TRUTH!" They got paid by the signature. Who could blame the guy?

Note: there was nothing to say that they couldn't bump your property taxes right back up after this crap was made law. Classic political bait and switch.

Anyone living in a house - be they paying rent, or owning - is paying property tax. No land lord is going to *not* include the taxes in the calculation for the rent. The only way renters don't pay, is if they don't pay rent. Then you kick them the hell out. Of course Brandon wants his eviction-ban cuz of The Coof, but SCOTUS struck that shit down.

Yep - there's always a way. Oregon passed a referendum decades ago to cap property taxes. The legislature has been trying to get around that ever since. And that doesn't' prohibit cities, counties, and other taxing bodies from pushing their damned bond measures every election cycle. The sheriff wants a bond for "enhanced patrol" - the library wants a bond to update their buildings, the schools *always* want bond money - the base tax rate is *never* what you actually pay, because of all the damn bond measures that usually get passed. And the legislature has gotten sneaky there.

Every time they pass a general sales tax in the legislature, it gets put up for referendum. Every time it has been slapped down (because even the lefties hate the idea of double taxation, or being taxed for buying shit when they don't have a job to pay income tax) - so they started sneaking in item-specific sales taxes. Buy a new car, or a used car that's less than five years old? 1% sales tax. They have "sin" taxes - alcohol, tobacco, and weed all have sales taxes (the retailers usually just roll the cost into the price shown on the shelf) IIRC there are a couple other item-specific taxes.

They always, always try to raise that shit too. Don't let them shove an income tax on us here in Texas, because before you know it, the greedy bastards will have California style tax rates and your paycheck won't go near as far as it used to.

If my neighbors vote for a $50 million bond measure to build a high school football stadium, I’m gonna lose my shit…

Thankfully I live in the poor part of town

Back in the late 60's when I was in high school we had a grass field with goal posts at each end and wooden bleachers and that was all we needed.

I missed that line - tourists are paying tax if they're renting anything. They're also already paying sales tax. Businesses they frequent have already calculated their tax burden into the costs of whatever they're charging for the goods or services provided. If tourists are staying with someone they know or are related to, you expect them to pay a share of property tax?

As for illegals - the ones I know of are paying tax - because they're paying rent. They might have 42 people crammed into a 2 bedroom shack, but someone's paying the rent, so the property tax is getting paid.
