So we have funds to handle Karen whining about the lawn, but if your house gets broken into, car stolen… just fill out an online form for insurance.

Yeah. I’m sure folks will want to support refunding the cops now.

    Yep.

The police were 100% justified in killing him because he escalated to the point of trying to kill people that weren't trying to kill him first.

Everything leading up to that point though, was a cluster. IF code enforcement people said 'okay, we'll come back another time' and sent someone by to talk to him - or even had the PD do it, or request the local Constables do it, or had the PD escort one of those mental health people you hear the lefties talk about a lot - maybe just maybe he wouldn't have shot at people and tried to Waco himself.

Definitely some Karens involved, because the news said code enforcement came out because of complaints by the neighbors. You know what they didn't say? That they neighbors got together to help him cut the damn grass. Maybe instead of dropping a dime to the city - the concerned neighbors could've come to him with their concerns and offered help.

Maybe they did - he rebuffed them because he's a nutter - we don't know at this point.

Its a shame the dude died, because it seems a case of being very preventable if the situation leading to the shooting had been handled differently, but ultimately he made the decision to kill someone (thankfully he was unsuccessful) over defending his property.

This and @Younggun 's take are about right IMO.

It's not a reasonable amount of force to shoot at people on your property that pose no threat to you. Yes, they should not be there and that is a whole issue that needs to be addressed.

Once bullets started flying, the man's right to be left alone was given up. Hard to find fault with APD proper here.

All of that said, we really need to think as a society if we want to outsource code compliance to the government and HOAs.

A month or two ago, the house next to mine sold and the new neighbors hadn't moved in yet. The front lawn was left to grow and grow because the previous neighbors didn't care either. It was becoming an eye sore. Instead of just sitting around and bitching about it like some of my neighbors (to be fair I did that too), I just went and cut their front lawn one day after I did mine.

    Problem solved.

There's a guy who popped up in my YouTube suggestions - that's his thing. He does free lawn care service as a community service on abandoned properties, or those whose owners just let it get out of hand for whatever reason - could be they're disabled and cannot do it, or whatever. He's saved a bunch of people from code enforcement.

Of course if the resident/owner is a total nutter, he might go off on you - but I think most people would welcome the help, especially if they have a physical limitation that doesn't allow them to do it.

This does bring to mind a distant neighbor of mine. Its one of the first houses you see coming into our neighborhood. Guy is a hoarder. His lawn gets cut with enough regularity (I know I sometimes go a week or two between mowings depending on weather, but I'm not part of the damn HOA, and we're not in the city either, and I don't let it get above six inches tall) - but his house is falling apart, he's got crap everywhere on his porch, his place just needs a lot of attention.

Neighbors have repeatedly volunteered to help him out. He has rebuffed them - the common excuse is "if you get hurt, you'll sue me and I don't want the liability" - I know from talking to some friends that this guy has received multiple HOA violation notices, and they're ready to start escalating and may wind up getting the county involved. If he's one of the almost 20% of HOA members not current on dues, he's going to wind up with a foreclosure notice.

I feel bad for the guy, and if he would *take* the help, I'd be happy to help him get rid of stuff, bag up trash, fix up his place so he didn't have to worry about that shit. The fact that it would improve the look of the neighborhood would be a secondary benefit. There are other homes at the front of the hood that are also in a state of disrepair, and the owner/occupants seem content. One dude's porch is about 4 inches lower on the road side than it is on the side of the house, damn porch is just sinking / ready to fall off his house.

Since the Awwsten city leaders are so obsessed with front lawn upkeep, I really wonder when they will start sending lawn crews to all the neighborhoods on the East side. Gonna get really interesting really fast.

While I do agree that a person's property should be their own, to do with as they please, but once you escalate a situation to the point of using a gun, then the entire dynamic of that situation change in totally different direction.

APD did what they had to do. I have no doubts that they took no pleasure, or count this as a win with the homeowner being shot and killed. Not a good day for either side in this situation.

For all of my dumb jokes, which are mostly just to mess with cycleguy. When Mr. Homeowner got out his gun, for whatever reason he sealed his own fate. My prayers are for the health of the officer that had to shoot back.
