When I was a kid (10-12) I was with my grandfather at a neighborhood store in Chicago and he asked me if I wanted anything. I pointed to a bottle of wine and a cigar. He bought then and when we got home he let me have a glass of wine and have a few puffs of the cigar, I was content with that.

Several years later I spent a summer with them. We were watching TV and there was an ad for Bock beer (not Shiner) and I asked what it was. My grandmother said it was only available once a year when they emptied the brewing vats or something like that. Anyway she bought a 6 pack so I could see what it tasted like. Different times.

I wanted the wine because I always used to see the bottles hanging from the rafters of the Italian restaurants and with candles in empty bottles on the tables. they looked something like this

My parents let me make wine when I was in junior high! Drinking beer a my grandparents after cutting grass was the norm.
