My son, who has recently graduated from college and now has a real JOB, is looking to buy his first bolt action rifle for deer and hog hunting. His caliber of choice (Thank God!) is the ubiquitous .308. My question is which rifle? He’s leaning towards the Sig Sauer Cross rifle because of it’s resemblance to the AR platform. I’m sure the “tacticool” look of the rifle also has a lot to do with his choice. Problem is this rifle has been getting a lot of bad reviews regarding it’s accuracy, bolt not closing easily on loading, magazines not seating properly, etc. Especially since this rifle runs right around 1500 bucks without any glass. There are too many models available to search out everyone of them so I thought asking here might be an effective way of sorting out the chaff from the wheat. Does anyone have any experience and/or knowledge of a good .308 bolt action with a resemblance to the AR platform?

First: congratulations for your son not being gay.

See what that kind of money will get you with Savage.

Savage all the way. Check out some videos on their floating bolt head and head space procedure. Pretty smart. Accu trigger ain't nothing sneeze at. I got an FV12 for under $400, bedded it in a Boyd's stock and it shoots .6 moa or better depending on me. Not bad for the money that's in it.

Savage rifle are some of the most accurate rifles out there. Yes you can get more accurate rifle, but the cost is far more than it is worth. Savage rifles will generally shoot 10 shot groups that run right at one inch. WHy do I use 10 shots? Three shot groups are statistically small, and 10 shots will give you a really good idea of the consistency of the rifle.

I mentioned an AR10 as I don’t understand the “cool” of a bolt action that looks like an AR. I think for hogs the semi automatic is better for fast followup. But to each his own. That Cabela Savage deal looks good.

Not much help on any ar lookalike 308s but congrats to your son and to you for raising a good one

Don't forget Bergara Rifles. They make some good shit. Fairly priced for what you get.

They have a good reputation. After looking at one in detail at my father in laws gunsmithing shop I’m mixed. For the money I don’t think I’d buy one. They definitely use their name and I still think Savage or Ruger is the better buy. For similar amount Cz is still an option.
