It’s been a long time for me and I want to get back into photography. In my teenage years I even had one of my pictures used for the American Botanical Council. Fast forward and here I am with some questions about new cameras and 4K.

I first want to say I want a full frame camera and I’m looking at Nikon and Panasonic. What I want is clarification on the cameras abilities. The general feedback online is for 4K stills is to take them from the video but do any cameras out there give you that level of detail without taking video? I’m really sorry for the stupid question, if it is one.

"4k" for a still camera is very, very low. The full frame cameras you're interested in are going to be much, much higher resolution. Nikon and Canon are the big two, but get what you like. The lens makes more difference than the body so it really comes down to what features you need and what control style you like. The biggest variable is still the guy behind the camera.

Yeah, 4K is a big deal for pulling frames from video and being able to crop them. Or when cropping video in general without losing quality.

But for general shooting, the resolution numbers don’t really work the same. Another thing is that you don’t generally blow a photo up to 75”. So you wouldn’t notice the drop if you cropped one down.

Last not about 4K when it comes to video. Editing 4K sucks unless you have a good computer to do it on. So assuming you have the ability to process the vid and you want to shoot videos 4K is great for the ability to crop (or digitally zoom) on the video without a noticeable drop on quality. If not you will probably end up better shooting in 1440 or 1080. But having the 4K option is still good if the budget fits.

Not an expert, just my experience doing hobby stuff here and there. Hell, my wife makes a little extra money doing graduation pictures and stuff with an EOS T3 I bought her years ago. It’s much more about the photographer, the lens, and lastly worrying about the camera as long as it’s of good quality (not some Wish dot com crap)

That’s what I thought! From what I read that’s what it sounded like. Thanks for the info.

Personal preference, I think. I'm most familiar with Canon and Nikon, but I prefer Canon's control layout. Maybe because that's what I started with? Who knows, but some people get religious about it. I have both.

Go shopping and see what speaks to you.

Grew up with Minolta and Olympus. I’m not brand loyal. So much to read. Appreciate the info.

I wouldn’t ever buy another Minolta. I dropped big money on one for the wife while in college. Problems with parts & repairs.

One my first trip to Africa I used A Canon Elph. Great little pocket camera. When the Digital Elphs came out I bought one of them. Still have both were the Minolta went to the curd when we moved.

If I was ever to buy another camera it would be a Canon.

I'll retort with- what kinda photography do you wanna do??
    Not sure. Open to ideas.

When I was a kid it was nature and travel. Nature photography is over saturated but I still love it.

I downloaded some apps for getting yourself and photos out there and wanted to see what’s popular these days...good god wtf is wrong with people these days? What people view as art is strange.

Minolta was middle of the road. It was a good camera to learn on. My dads Olympus was great. The difference in build quality was obvious.

Do it for the love of it. My wife is 20+ years deep into it. She'll hustle and make that $$ but her heart isn't there. Photos and people is the quick easy money, but she hates taking photos of people. She can take pictures all day of nature, landscapes and astrophotography.

She has 2 Canon's. Mark5, Mark7 and Canon, Sigma lenses.

She is pretty damn good with photoshop. 20+ years deep, she has learned a lot. Editing photos is a whole nother element.

That sucks you guys live so far away. I’d enjoy learning anything she’s willing to teach.

In my early 20’s (early 2000’s) I stepped away from programming and web design. I wanted to keep my distance from technology after accidentally learning something. That’s a discussion for off the board.

I should probably sell the Canon EOS 5D classic and the 24-70 f/2.8L I have had sitting in the case for years. If I grab a camera that isn't my iPhone, it's the faster Nikon D7200 with the kit lens because I'm just snapping quick pics of what the kids are doing.

I am a Nikon guy since 1963. My digitals are all Nikon. I don't do pictures that wiggle (video) so keep that in mind. If I was looking for a new camera or camera system I would look at Fuji or Olympus. They are 4/3 camera but have the same resolution as most of the full frame cameras. Nikon has a couple that have over 30 megapixels but unless you intend to severely crop you don't need them.

Really we need more info as to what you will be shooting, uses for the images, editing software you have or will get and a bunch of other information before we can give good recommendations.

That said, Adobe has a monthly subscription for photographers that includes Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 a month. Whatever camera you get will have some free software too.

The money is in the lenses…so you gotta decide if you want Nikon, Canon or some other compatibility.

IMHO sticking to the two above will yield the most lens and accessory options, which helps keep prices sane as many third-party brands also make stuff for them.
