how far forward should you mount a red dot sight?

I agree with ATY and Vec. Grasshopper, what you are saying does not make sense.

I'm not reading from studies. Nor others experience on a red dot. I can offer my idea behind it but it's up to interpretation. I've used a red dot exclusively in a very trying environment. I've had a red dot up close to far out. I'm fully aware that the red dot superimposes to the less dominant eye. The sight as it's has been stated...disappears.

Having the sight close provided me with a stronger concentration point vs the sight being farther away. I personally like to engulf my point of view to the target within the tube of the sight. I want to look through it as if it was reading glasses. I like my sights close.

    Make sense? Does to me.

It does make sense. It's definitely user preference. The reason why I do not mount it close is because the housing of the unit obstructs way more of my FOV when right next to my eye.

I mount mine as far forward on the receiver as possible. I don't want it interrupting my field of view.

    Agree.
Strongly based on wanderings in the field.

I my kitchen (AKA workbench) I like it rearward and with a big field of view.
    It just seems right.

    But......
Wandering in the field and quick tossing it up and acquiring a target, be it a squirrel or dot on a paper target, mounted far forward is so much faster and more instinctive.

The answer, as is often the case, is "it depends".

    Try both ways.....mounted back......mounted forward.
YOU tell us what works for YOU.

    I'm lucky.
I have a private dump to shoot airborne beer bottles, self tossed.
Forward mounted red dot works for my instinctive me-brain.

this is where I have it mounted. eventually I want to get a flip up magnifier this is the purpose of the question.
When you get the flip magnifier you'll have to mount it all the way forward. Those mounts offset forward like that to make room for the magnifier.

As to where you mount it without a magnifier? Personal preference...

Personally I mount mine on the last T mark possible before running onto the rail. Allows room for BUS or a magnifier

Was doing some online looking around about red dots far forward and this came up in my interwebs search. Good to see this discussion on here too in addition to other websites.

My SOCOM 16 currently has only the scout scope mount way out on the barrel and I temporarily put an Aimpoint Comp M4S and some buddies have asked about its location.

I just switched over to a LPVO on my AR, Vs red dot with magnifier. I went with a Vortex Strike Eagle 1x6 with BDC reticle. I really like having the option to magnify if need be. I've shot it only out to 150 yards with it on 6x & feel I can go to 200-250 before the target gets too small for my old eyes. Id like to try it out to 500-600 if I get a chance.

It’s not sighted in, just put on the rail. Mount is too high though.

I checked the Springfield website, they don't show that stock as an option anymore. I think yours looks better than the options now.
Thank you. I bought it in 09 with the factory OD Green stock, took about four months longer to get green over a black stock. Then the Archangel came out a couple of years later and so bought that in black as it was the only color available. I still had the factory green top hand guard cover so I was good. Then a couple of years after that I randomly saw the stock was available in green so I ordered another one. Never like the scout scope type location so went looking for rails. Not many options and I refuse to buy Troy Ind. parts so the VLTOR it was.

ProMag is not a brand I usually like but they actually did really well on the stock. I looked at the JAE chassis/stock but it’s cali compliant and not really a pistol grip so I went with the ProMag instead.

Watching this thread, as I'm no expert, but want to move my RDS from AR to PCC and put a scope on the AR.

Found a real pearl on here "A RDS is not a scope!" AMEN !

One question, does OP want to use both eyes open w/ red dot, or dominant eye only, like a scope? Please excuse my inexperience with the RDS.
