If you have a vehicle with a 4L60 automatic transmission (a common GM trans in trucks and SUVs since 1993) that shifts from 1st to 2nd and when it should shift to third the engine starts revving up, it's not an electronic problem. It means that the 3-4 clutch has failed.
Or if it shifts straight from 1st to 3rd and has no 4th, you probably snapped the 2nd gear band or it's anchor pin. Splitting hairs, the 4l60 wasn't electronic, that was just the new name for the th700r4 when they decided to standardize/patternize the naming convention. The 4l60e is the electronic valve body variant.

    Speaking of the naming convention:
    4 - forward gears
    L - longitudinally mounted
    60 - Newton meters torque capacity (x10)
    e - Electronic shift

No sir, the 4L60 is a completely electronically controlled transmission, not a 700. GM dropped the E. Never ever saw one with a split band or anchor.

The E was introduced in 1992. Prior to that most people were still calling them TH700R4's, but GM/HydraMatic called them the 4L60. TV cable and all. After 92 they got the E, which came with shift solenoids. In more recent years, people have indeed dropped the E because all boxes are now electronically controlled. But there is a big difference if you fail to consider the year. For that matter, you need to consider the year because the early boxes were a single case, where the newer ones are split in three (bellhousing, main case, and tailhousing).

As for a band failure, you were obviously not running into people who (ab)used these boxes like those in my circles. Wife called me from work one day, saying she lost 2nd and 4th on the way in. She ran a 'mild' 76mm turbo setup on her 370cid Camaro (10-14psi curve on pump gas). The trans was rebuilt with a kevlar band and a larger billet servo. It grabbed and held really well. A little too well. It tore right through the steel where the saddle is riveted to the band. The shifts didn't feel overly violent because of the higher rpm stall converter, but the band just couldn't take that amount of abuse. We went back with a stock band and softened the apply curve just a hair to let it live. The high gear pack was obviously upgraded, the rings on the input shaft were changed from split to solid, the drain hole in the bottom of the input drum was revised to improve pressure on the pack at high RPM, etc. All the hard parts were upgraded of course, sprag, billet sun shell, 5 gear planetary, blah blah blah.

All I worked on were daily drivers. Probably why I never saw that. I did see plenty of stripped sun gear shells. Also on other forums about cars people always ask for advice on fixing their 4L60 that revs up in third and almost all of them start replacing solenoids in it. I guess it's human nature to not want it to be a major job.

Looks like we might've accidentally gotten into Laos a couple of time.

Heh yeah that 3/4 pack was the Achille's heel. Once you blow through it and it glazes, it'll be burned up in no time. High RPM was the killer, that long fluid path and so many opportunities to lose pressure. We relatively rarely stripped the shells, but we would crack 'em right at the root of where the teeth engaged. I always assumed the stripped shells would be from people doing neutral drops, rocking themselves out of a mud hole, jumping on/off the gas, etc. The 5 gear planetary (from the 4l65e) was seen as an upgrade, but honestly I can't remember anyone blowing up a 4 gear. Saw a few exploded sprags though.
