The most common reasons for the IRS to reject a return for ID issues are that you made a typo on it (like putting in the wrong SSN) or someone else has already filed your return.

The first return filed with your SSN gets the refund. When thieves steal your identity in order to steal your refund, they file as early as possible. The onus to prove who you are always falls on the head of the second person to use that SSN.

If you're in that situation, God help you.

As for the methods of proving who you are, that's a really important process that's never been easy (nor should it be easy) because it's so important. Unfortunately, the IRS is attempting to integrate more modern methods to verify ID and they are truly screwing the pooch at every turn. That could be a thread all on its own.

One final note - Make sure you're dealing with the IRS. Some scammers have gotten very sophisticated about impersonating the IRS when they try to steal your identity.
It was through Turbo tax which then sent me to the IRS website. I looked it over very carefully.

So, this is the closest thing to any kind of possible social media I do, which my boss knows. I don't really like images of me posted all over people's social media either...... well today my boss walks in trying to video me and saying I want to introduce all my employees on my social media, which I politely told him to shove it where the sun don't shine....

The procedures built into the system per the directions from the Electronic Filing Coordinator will (well, are supposed to) weed out any ID numbers that have already been used this year and prevent them from being used twice. Having someone else file with your SSN is bad; having two returns filed with the same SSN is worse.

I'm sad to say this doesn't sound good.
