Federal released a new pistol cartridge at SHOT SHOW this year, the .30 Super Carry.

I think it's cool they are trying new things & being innovative in the industry. On the other hand I'm not sold on it as a replacement for 9mm. Since it has similar performance to 9mm. I couldn't imagine trying to get a new cartridge that is trying to take off from the LGS right now. When compared to a 10rd 9mm magazine you get 2 more rounds in the same magazine space.
They say the ammo will be around the price of .380. As of now only 2 manufacturers are making pistols, Smith & Wesson ... & Nighthawk Custom. I'll see how it takes off & ammo availability over the next few year's.

Here's some screen shots from Federals site.

    Gunz are icky.
Not trying to be an old Fudd here but Why?
This new cartridge isn’t new. It’s just a reiteration of the old Tokarev 7.62 round, or the even more ancient .30 Mauser and .30 Luger rounds. Those calibers failed due to lesser performance than the 9x19.
This new cartridge is a very high pressure round hence muzzle blast and report are going to be quite unpleasant. I’m hearing it’s going to be about like the .30 Carbine. If you’ve ever fired a .30 Carbine out of a handgun you’ll know what i’m talking here.
Ammo pricing will be way up there as well.
The selection of handguns chambered for it will be few. Oh look another polymer framed ugly as a mud fence Motel 6 hooker looking pistol! Pass.
I will not be a buyer. Not because its a bad cartridge more because it doesn’t do anything better than I already have. No need to retool for a new cartridge.

Adding a new caliber to my collection for an extra 3 rounds capacity just doesn’t make sense to me.

If I’m gonna look for more handgun capacity, I’m going all-in on 5.7…

Adding a new caliber and doubling capacity makes some sense.

It’s not even in the same ballpark as 7.62x25 subgun ammo out of a handgun.

Finally, a well thought and laid out critique.

While you are correct that performance is on par with the 30 Luger and/or 30 Mauser, are you forgetting that those were bottlenecked rounds with .393” base diameter? The beauty of this round is it’s ability to achieve that performance while having a base diameter of only .3425”

I do agree with you that the muzzle report will likely be terrible. As a matter of fact, when I first read about the round, I commented to my father that 50k psi in a .312 bore would be very loud and sharp.

What this round does better is CAPACITY. If you can have the same performance with better capacity, how is that not a win?
I do agree the introduction timing could be better with the ammo crunch ongoing, but keep in mind Federal has been developing this cartridge for years. How long should they sit on it before releasing it? 2years? 5 years? Is there any guarantee we won’t be in an ammo crunch then as well?
My biggest gripe about the cartridge is the name. Why in the world is it not the 32 Super Carry? It uses .3125 bullets, just the same as every other 32 caliber out there.
