Thanks for the tips. I've also found that just driving around in the countryside up around Georgetown is very pretty and calming.
    I just need to say.
If roads around Georgetown make you relax, you're nearly beyond help.

That area is where I used to get tense and anything towards Austin from there just magnified the intensity.

There’s a good reason why 94% of Texas is private land. It’s been written about numerous times here. If public land is your thing, you’re going to have to move again.
Well aware of the history and why that's the case. I'd love to live out in a smaller town or city in east Texas where's there some national forest where you camp, shoot, hike, etc. But I gotta work.

Go a little further north and you'll find Salado. Nice little town to walk around in, and they even have a nice park with a creek running through it. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday. And in mid-November it'll be crowded to the gills with men in kilts and bagpipe bands. Parking is annoying, but a Scottish festival taking over an entire small hill country town is a thing to experience.
Sounds like fun! Thanks! >marks calendar<

My days off are mid-week so driving around up there at that time in the middle of the day the roads are pretty empty. The weekends are entirely different.

Try the Corp of Engineers parks around Lake Georgetown for hiking. You can park at the dam overlook and either head around the lake, or down the path towards San Gabriel Park. After school starts it should not be crowded at all. I would suggest bringing plenty of water to drink, not any on the trails. You can also try Twin Spring Preserve, off CR 262. There are also several areas further around the lake to park and access trails. Check the Corp web site for maps.

In the east side of Georgetown is Berry Springs Park with some nice trails. San Gabriel Park has some well maintained granite walking paths.

I assume you are a recent transplant to the area, welcome to Central Texas, and don't judge the rest of the state by how Austin has become.

Thanks! Actually I've been here since late 2016. I'm well aware Austin's an anomaly. I've just been too financially strapped to do much travelling in the state. I do hit the barbecue towns south of Austin now and then. There's a bunch of places I want to see once I get my car fixed and dump the rental I'm using.

I do DoorDash type food delivery in Austin. I hang out downtown because that's where the highest density of orders and highest payouts are. I see how the homeless f**k up our cities. I'm constantly panhandled. I see people smoking meth right out on the street. I see them freaking out when totally high. I see severely mentally ill people acting out all over the place. I see homeless sleeping everywhere, right on the sidewalks. I see small tent encampments surrounded by fields of trash. I see homeless people fighting all the time, sometimes extremely violently. I see them drinking, smoking, puking and pissing. And people just walk by it all pretending not to see it, acting as if it's normal. Which I guess it's become.
Worked night shift, going under 45 north to 1960, people would approach me at 4am. I never carry cash but do carry a sidearm.

Well, you were driving through their living room. :) Seriously, though, I don't get it. Of all the places homeless people can crash, I wonder why some choose to live up at the top of the slope in the crack between highway and the base.

Being a Safety Professional for almost 40 years......this kind of crap causes my testicles to draw up inside of me.

Especially when you know how poorly constructed those newel post and railings are... I surely would never lean against one, much less attempt to use one to support a span across the room to walk on. I get really nervous when you see the 20 foot tall back wall with lots of windows shake when you close the front entry door. I hope there never is a truly STRONG wind blowing against it. Hell, the illegal immigrant framing crews can't even make a straight stub wall, rough openings are so out of plumb and square, it makes jamb installations a bitch.
