Saw my first snake of 2022 today. Opened the gate into my back yard and the snake came directly at me, slithering between my feet. Yes, I screamed like a little girl and danced my happy ass 10 feet away before I realized it was a green snake and totally harmless. Also it was about 1/4 of an inch in diameter (though surprisingly long - maybe 18 inches). The snake and I parted ways amicably.

A good friend would've been there with a video camera.

Got home about 20 or so minutes ago. A few crape myrtles my wife picked up in pots were tipped over (breeze blew them down) so I go to pick them back up and decide to water. I've got my flashlight, and its right in front of the house, bright security lights on. Figure no biggie. I begin watering - I started watering some redbuds I'd transplanted a couple months ago that have been struggling - then decide no, I should water her plants first because the dirt was pretty dry. I start watering then a fucking copperhead I didn't see *at my feet* starts making its way away from me. I tried hurrying him along by spraying - that pissed him off and he started coming back at me. I just kept spraying him until he retreated 20 yards away.

Finished my watering of those plants while keeping an eye on snek - he went under my tomato planter at the edge of the driveway. I needed to water them. I sprayed the fucker some more, to get him out from under the planter. Got my tomatos / peppers watered. Snake took off into the big part of the yard.

Close call, because I almost stepped on the damn thing and it could've bit me easily, it was so close. I didn't see it, it blended in in plain sight so well!

Not sure what kind of village people gayness this pic was taken for, but when fighting wild fire ( brush, grass, forest) you do not wear bunker gear, lol.
Although, When Austin Fire Department first came out to assist with a prescribed burn we were doing ( they “invited” themselves) they showed up in mid August in bunker gear and were dropping like flies after about an hour.
They just didn’t know any better even though our Fire Boss, The USFW Fire Boss, Travis County Wildfire Fire Boss all told them in a chain of emails what the appropriate gear was.

To AFD’s credit, after that first rodeo they all got certified in wildfire training and spent a ton of taxpayer money to be properly kitted out for it.

We all knew what would happen on that first rodeo and had extra ems on site. Nothing worse than minor heat exhaustion, and the AFD folks on site learned that they are NOT the only ones professional enough.;)

At 6 feet, it was probably a rat snake or a huge watersnake (prob rat snake) - moccasins don't get that big in general.
Right you are! in the three years I've lived here , I've seen one 6' cotton mouth which I skinned after a 5' away head shot from my dock. There is a 4' Brazos River snake who lives in an Ivy patch by the water in my back yard... I named him Elmo because whenever I go out back I say to myself "Where's Elmo!"

He had just ate an egg in my neighbors coop. I got him to regurgitate it, and he was like, I don’t want the egg back.

Do you really believe a snakes throat is dirtier than a chickens butt?

    He washed the egg off.
You're holding that while he's alive?!

    Snakecharmer!!

    ETA: rat snake lol
