Lately I've noticed this more and more. People, usually teenagers, buy your typical muscle cars; Mustangs, Challengers, Chargers, etc. But they buy them with 4-cylinder engines then put super-loud exhausts on them. Every time they take off from a stoplight they floor it. It's incredibly tinny, raspy and loud but the car is barely moving. It's obnoxious as hell. It seems all they care about is the noise, not the performance. And they apparently think that's the cool thing to do.

I have no problem with 4 or 6 cylinder engines in these cars, but those crappy exhausts are absolutely annoying and worthless.
But not as annoying and worthless as the cars with trunks full of amplifiers and speakers that rattle the windows in all the cars around them.

Yep, was just about to say the same thing. You'd be surprised, most of these are over square and keeping the shift points down in pretty pedestrian ranges. Direct injection, variable valve timing, good sensor inputs, and boost make it possible to make a "little" 4 cylinder drive like a much larger displacement motor. Here's a chassis dyno pull from a 4 banger Camaro:

Nothing new. Since cheap 20yo Civic 4 bangers became the inexpensive teen car, they've been putting fart cans on those for years. I'll agree with others regarding the bass they place in those too. Nothing like sitting next to one at a light and you hear the metallic rattle of all body panels.

A Honda K24 engine will make more power than you can believe. I agree with the OP about the fart cans though.
Do you understand how hp is derived? It's just a math formula or torque x rpm divided by 5252. Basically the more rpms you turn the more HP as long as you can carry some torque up high. A Honda that makes 800hp is usually has around 500ftlbs of torque whereas a lower reving v8 making 800 will usually be in the neighborhood of 700ftlbs. Not all HP is created equal.

Oh yeah - I understand that. Don't get me wrong, I love me some V8 torque.
