Old model Ruger .357 on a brass super Blackhawk gripframe with Super blackhawk trigger and hammer (with shims) custom scrimshawed fake ivory grips and a Leupold 2.5 ER scope for my old eyes and a ribbed barrel added after heat shimmer in Arizona steel plate matches became a problem.

Hm - smart ass in me says "it would be semi automatic, self cocking, and feature a low bore axis for less muzzle flip" ala the Mateba autorevolver.

I suppose if we're going with more main stream ideas...

It would have squreish / coke bottle styled grips with good checkering. It would be old school Smith & Wesson blued - the kind of blue that stares into you as you stare into it kind of like the void of space. Five inch barrel. Sights would be Bomar style, I think. A high vizibility front sight blade - blaze orange to make it easy to see. Trigger would have to be butter smooth, maybe an 8 or 9 lb DA pull, maybe a 2lb SA pull.

I'm not the biggest fan of heavy recoil, but if I'm going revolver I want something that hits with some authority, I'm thinking .44Spl or .45 Colt. Don't need a heavy magnum load. Yes, the thread was asking about .357's / 38's - so I suppose if I had to go with one of those - I'd chose .38spl loadings and run it in a .357Mag for that slight bit of extra weight / beefieness.

I did the trigger work and installed the 44 frame stuff the barrel work was Greene.s gunshop in WA and the scrimshaw by Beryl Barnett in Houston.
I tried a stainless frame first and did not like the look ... still have it and the original barrel if you want to upgrade your Blackhawk

I've owned several brands of this caliber revolver and though some of them were excellent firearms, I have really grown to love this GP-100. It started out as a repatriated gun from a Canadian Police Force. It is factory double action only and has a 3" barrel. The trigger is amazingly smooth with a crisp break. It shoots to point of aim and is comfortable to shoot. I love to carry it IWB as a part of my carry gun rotation. When I got the gun it looked like it had never been shot. I dehorned it and did a minimal bead blast to make everything look even.

Pre lock S&W, enough said. Most need a action job but once done, to me, nothing compares.
Yep, I might tolerate a MIM Smith, but I draw the line at the lock. For me it’s the principle of the lock itself and the looks of it. I’m probably not good enough to notice anything different with the trigger. Personally I have 66-1 4”, 66-1 6-1/8“ (they were a limited run) and 19-5 6”. All slick shooters, but for SHTF, I’d fall back on the Ruger GP. When you run out of ammo, it can be used as a club

False. Full underlug and vent rib. Those disqualify the python

    Thank you! Those are Hideous!

This is a topic near & dear to my heart.

Despite the full-lug barrels and vent rib on one of them, the Korth or Manurhin are the only ones that might suit me out of the box. Plus they’re quite pricey.

So I’ll stick with American made.

Despite the obvious advantages of stainless, I’d prefer a blued finish.

I love Smith K-frames, but durability with magnums disqualifies them. Quality issues disqualifies anything current.

The registered magnum is a great revolver, but too big.

The L-frame would be Goldilocks, we’re it not for the full lug.

A 586 Mountain Gun would be awesome, especially if built to pre-1966 standards. If Smith offered one now, I might overcome my distaste for their current offerings.

The Pythons predecessor, the Three-Fifty-Seven would check most of my boxes, however, both models went out of time frequently due to the hand bearing on the ratchet at ignition, and there’s not a lot of gunsmiths around anymore who know how to work on them.

The current Python supposedly fixes that, but it would need a reshaped barrel, replace the vent rib and new rear sight. But then we’re approaching the cost of an MR73 for a gun that would look like a Trooper MK III. No thank you.

The GP100 in the MC trim is a fine revolver with new sights (Bowen RC rear) and a real action job. Mine is a 10mm. I still prefer Smiths for DA shooting. Plus it’s a bit heavy.

My current candidate is a 160-series 4-inch Security Six. As soon as another custom project is complete, it will be going off to a gunsmith for an action job and custom front sight.

Single action would be either an original Ruger flat top or Colt New Frontier, 4 3/4“ barrel.

I agree that those would be satisfactory out of the box. However, that's only taking into account double-action revolvers. I note that you only give one throwaway sentence to single actions at the bottom of your post.

So since you're RevolverGuy, could you dive a little deeper there? The Picra is big and only useful for special purposes. Freedom Arms, though, can make a very nice, surprisingly compact (if heavy) .357 if you go through the options list; a round-butt, 3.5" to 5" Model 97 would be pretty sweet.

What's your opinion of Picra and, especially, Freedom Arms?
