On Monday, he was sentenced to 3.5 years in a Mexican prison while also being fined $1,100.

I have a friend that live on the Pacific side of Baja.

AFAIK the tourista towns are still fairly safe as long as you stay in the major populated area. I would no longer rent a car to tour the countryside like I used to do. But fly in, fly out, should be no problem if you don't give the federales any sheet.
