I missed his presser last night. Anyone catch it, who could give the Cliff's Notes ( with apologies to you youngsters)?

200 million dollar warplane and a $400,000 missile to shoot down a $200 balloon. Plus the operating expense of the AC. One of the shoot-downs reportedly had tanker and follower ac so cost of other stuff was in the multiple M$s.

So...do we instead allow China unfettered access to our airspace? Right now the only viable way to take a high altitude balloon out appears to be a Sidewinder. Although there have been experiments with fitting laser-guidance packages onto Hydra rockets as short range air-to-air weapons - not sure how "short" the short range on that is, though.

BTW, they didn't run out and buy the F-22 just for this mission, so the "$200 million dollar warplane" complaint is a little silly. The rest are valid expenses that aren't cheap at all...but it was at least a challenging live-fire exercise for the aircrew involved. Maybe you can look at it as saving the expense of flying the F-22 down to Tyndall for a few days and flying a QF-16 out over the Gulf to shoot down.

But should we be pissed of they used a missile, or pissed off they waited a week until it was done gathering its intel on our missile sites? I'm pissed off that it was allowed to go along its merry way until it had completely traversed the continent.

    Here
I find it hard to believe that the CSB could not have been brought down by using the 20MM gun. It would have made the recovery much easier and more complete since it would have been left pretty much intact.

If they want any balloons shot down without blowing it up into a million pieces, where they can't find most of it. All they need to do is maneuver it over a TGT shoot and we'll shoot it down for them. It might have a few (hundred) holes in it and be in a hundred pieces, but it'll be on several acres and easy to locate the pieces.

Heck, we were sending weather balloons from antartica to measure the ozone 'hole' weekly. Designed to release at altitude and deflate.
