I keep reading about guys "thinking of getting an AK, AR, FAL, etc" - waiting to get the funds, etc...

Is it not roundly understood that there has been a huge run on these and that there are virtually non to be had right now?

You may be able to scrounge one up or buy one with a 20% increase price... but even those are gone in many places...

Point is if you want one - don't wait!!! A few more weeks and there will be zip. Nadda.

Some of us can't afford to just buy anything we want at the drop of a dime. After being blindsided (my own fault) by the crash of the real estate market, I've taken a 75% pay cut after having to switch jobs. Now I'm just scraping by. Thanks to the assholes marking their prices up, now it will take me even longer to afford what I want/need. Hell, people are paying $600-700 for crappy Century WASR's! PTR's (what I really want) are up to $1400-1500, a 50% increase from a few weeks ago. AR's are up around $200-400 more. On top of that, I just found out our factory is shutting down for 2 weeks during Christmas, and I'm only a contractor so now I have to get by with only 2 weeks pay. Luckily there are a few places like Academy and some small gun shops around here that have relatively stable prices and haven't been gouging people on them. It looks like what I buy will be at the mercy of what they happen to have in stock (which isn't much).

Oh I understand not having the cash on hand - been there done that.

I'm just saying that many people don't seem to understand that there won't be much available from now until... well for a long time no doubt and what is will see steady increases in price. After the probably ban - things will be absolutely rediculous.

So, waiting may not work out so well. Selling something that you have to get what you want might be a good way to go - if that's an option.

    That's all I'm saying.

Now some are saying that they predict prices will fall again in a month or so, but I don't think so - I think there are a lot people just now getting the "word" on this - non-gunnut types....

And you took a 75% pay cut? Holy cow. No other options? What do you do? You say consultant, which makes me think "computer - network manager, etc.)...

My father just picked up the last converted Saiga in 7.62x39 that Classicarms.us had in stock. I bought an AR over a year ago, so I am set in that area. People really should go buy a lower if they can't afford the whole AR right now. As long as you have the serialized part of the gun it will be a pre-ban configuration if there is one. Plus, they are still less than $250 for a fully assembled one with a butt stock some places. The uppers are going to be more available than a full rifle.

You are assuming a "grandfather" clause.

I think even Mr. Obama himself understands that if he tried something like that this nation would come apart at the seams overnight. I'm not really worried about them confiscating firearms at this point, we all know there are plenty of armed citizens in this country. Not to mention, the AWB that has been drafted currently does have a grandfather clause in it.

Don't shy away from an unconverted Saiga - check this out:

    Saiga Conversion

I've done three of these - two of which I still own. One .308 (easily get 2", 100 yard groups with rusky optics and milsurp ammo) and one .223 - very sweet carbine that loves inexpensive steel cased ammo.

    Here's the pics:

    308
    HPIM1165.JPG

223 (before I had the fire control group to install)
    HPIM1212.JPG

Both are set to use high cap aftermarket mags - FBMG for the 308 and can't remember the other brand for the 223 - but the 223 would've been fairly easy to conver to take East German mags...

You have FAR too much faith in your fellow American gun owner.

90%+ would just turn them in.

Nope, unfortunately not. Never finished college, never finished classes for a Cisco CCNA certification, screwed myself big time not finishing either of those. Now I'm relegated to "entry level" stuff even though I'm a bit beyond that. ;) Oh well, that's how it goes. At least it's made me start paying attention to my financials rather than just winging it every paycheck. ;)

One things for sure, everyone should be buying everything they can afford right now. Prices aren't going to really drop any more, and especially if the new AWB passes.

That's quite contrary to what happened after the last AWB, and although this new AWB seems to be a bit more encompassing, I tend to disagree with your assessment. Demand will reach a high point, then trend back down once nerves calm, with prices following. At least that's my (maybe overly) optimistic opinion. ;)

TXSUT -- I think you are right, also there is a lot being bought up now without a lot of thought ----
----a few months down the road and some of those EBR's/lowers that have been sitting in a closet, with an owner who can't really remember why he bought it/them are going to come onto the market.

Last time around, there also wasn't a president stating that he wanted to see the AWB become PERMANENT. I think many are starting to realize that if the Dem's get their way, all of these things will be gone for good, and it's a very real possibility they could accomplish it. I'm sure that will keep people's fears going right to the beginning of a new AWB.

I second Academy. To this point their prices haven't gone up and I'm thinking if I buy an AR, I'll buy one of their Bushmaster's most likely.

I bought a bushmaster from academy last week and i could have sold it at the gun show in san antonio this weekend and made $400 if i really wanted. Instead, i got some more 30rnd mags, and other goodies for it.

Well I am one of those who paid through the nose for a Colt 6920 recently. I don't blame the gunshop as that is IMO how capitalism works. I had run into some hard times a few months ago and had to sell my AR's to fund some things like rent! I was willing to pay a premium for the Colt because, 1. I could afford it, and 2. I wanted the AR in hand and in my safe. I don't consider my purchase a panic buy at all. This Colt will definately stay with me I swear!!!

If you can get a Bushmaster at pre-frenzy prices, I'd do it if I didn't have one, that's for sure - then I'd find the decent deals on mags and stock up on those too.

And I think its going beyond the firearms this time guys - they will learn from past "mistakes" and restrict ammo - there is already talk of microstamping requirements and turn-ins on any non-compliant ammo.

I am sure most here feel as I do about that last - we'll turn em in one at a time...

It's sort of funny. Several weeks ago I sold a dressed-up Yugo SKS...really tricked out (but 922r compliant.) I had saved up some funds to add to what I was going to get for the SKS. I just wanted an AR. Had never had one. Got me a very nice deal on a Stag Arms Model 3. A little while after I got it, the prices shot up. I wasn't even thinking about Obama when I got it. Glad I got it when I did. Whew!

Chicken Little called and said relax.

There are rifles out there. More then ever.
The gun manufactures have not increased their prices.
Dealers are the ones who are responding to the frenzy.
If the gun buying public calms down so will go the prices.

Where do you get your information?

The wholesalers have bumped their prices. Yes, the dealers have taken an even bigger increase- responding to the fact that they are deluged with demand for the rifles - a "normal" free-market response.

Where are all of the rifles that you cite?

Most places (not all) are completely out of stock and awaiting orders - but the wholesalers are also out and manufacturers are backed up 3 months or more.

This is on AR-15's and most AK types.

Again, I would suggest that it would be wise to get the AR now (yes, look for a decent price - maybe 1 or 200 over previously normal) and buy.

I'd suggest checking atlanticarms.com - they are a gunsnet sponsor and have only taken a small increase and I think they many have some models available. As mentioned perhaps Academy has Bushmasters for a good price right now.

If you wait, it may very well mean no rifle or a much much higher price.

For some reason the general public has paid attention to obama's gun ban past and put that together with nancy pelosi and harry reid and came up with the obvious answer.
