    I was checking out the new Lexus RZ, and it has an optional steering yoke that’s paired with variable gear ratio steering.

    It’s programmed so that you never have to take your hands off the yoke, even for the sharpest turns.

    This is as far as the wheel turns.
    It takes a second to get used to it, but on the road or in parking lots it actually feels pretty natural.

    Overall, you just don’t need to turn the wheel nearly as much as a conventional system.

    The difference from Tesla’s yoke is, Tesla uses a conventional steering rack, so for sharp turns you have to remove hands from the yoke.

    I guess there’s a 10 and 2 there, but I’m less intrigued by the design and more intrigued by the variable gear ratio.

    ETA. Steer-by-wire; no conventional steering shaft

    I am ok with fly by wire for the throttle, and even electronic assist for steering, but both steering and brakes MUST HAVE a mechanical link, if for no other reason than backup in the event of an electrical failure.

    I cant remember the title, but i read a fictional book a while back where Teslas were getting hacked and driving taken over remotely causing all kinds of havoc.

    Not long ago that would be far fetched, but today?

    I think the biggest challenge is, with a wheel you can drive with one hand balanced atop the wheel, without having to hold-up your arm.

    With a yoke, you have no alternative to 9-3.
    With two hands, the wheel is balanced and you aren’t supporting the weight of your arm.

    But one-handed driving offers no support, so you need to use shoulder muscles to hold one hand on wheel.

    F#*k that. It's already bad enough there's so much "variability." Variable throttle mapping. Fuzzy logic in the transmission altering shift patterns. Or my absolute favorite (not) the selective brake preloading logic that is all nice and calm until you turn the corner a little hard and the next light brake application puts you through the windshield.

    Cars are getting more and more disconnected from the driver, and honestly unpredictable when driven hard. So often in trying to figure out what you want, the software just plain gets it wrong.

    But then again, this is a Lexus, and they're not made for drivers.
