    Gunz are icky.
A few days ago we had some very windy weather move thru here.
The pecan trees out in the back yard dropped many limbs.
Today I went to gather them up to dispose of them.
So my old decrepit self is out there picking up.
As I was reaching down something moved in the grass. At first I didn’t recognize it.
It was a snake. A coral snake no less. I jumped back. Very quickly I grabbed a shovel and went to kill the thing.
    Suddenly I stopped.
I watched the snake for a moment. It had stopped moving when I did. It really was a beautiful creature.
A sadness came to me. I didn’t want to destroy something so pretty. I let it go.
For the first time in my life I let a venomous snake go on its way.
If it had been a liberal or a Californian I would of smashed the ever living brains out of it.

If you were going to let one go, that was a good one to let go. They usually aren't aggressive, and have a small mouth.

I probably would have relocated it with that shovel since your dogs are small.

No one in Texas has died of a coral snake bite since the antivenin was produced in small amounts in the early 1960s. A Florida man died in 2006, but that was because he didn’t go for help. He died within a few hours of respiratory suffocation. Coral snake venom is a neurotoxin, a cousin of cobra venom.
    Have a nice day .

    Moonpie,

Every year, I have, generally speaking, about 2/3 'coral snakes' visit my yard, especially during this wonderful Spring weather.

Like you, I don't kill them...I transport them outside my fence.

I've even done this with 'Cottonmouth's" who I also get 2/3 of this time of year...but, I'm pretty sure that kindness came back to haunt me last year...sadly, I 'disappeared it'...

I have made peace with my decision.
Coral snakes are shy non-aggressive. They’re common here. That snake has probably been in my yard its entire life. Never bothered me or the dogs. Had it been a striking type like a rattlesnake or copperhead it would have been eliminated. Corals eat bugs.
No lost sleep here. I did ask myself What round for coral snakes?

I attacked one while I was weed waking my fenceline only because it scared me. I swear it came from Nowhere and my instinct said kill it.
I saw some pieces fly but never found any. I went back and looked the next day and nothing. I hope it wasn't a dream.
