My wife and I are new to Texas, and are both interested in acquiring our LTC. I recently learned that red dots are not allowed for the proficiency test. I honestly would have never expected to hear that, so I’m glad I found out before scheduling a class!
My question is this: What do you do when someone (like me) shows up with one? Turn it off? Tape it off? Loaner pistol?
I plan to bring something with irons, just seems weird that I can’t use my actual carry gun!
All input is appreciated, thank you!

I'm guessing they'd expect you to use a pistol with iron sights and not one equipped with a red dot you could potentially try to use. If it's an option for you, take both and use whichever you're allowed to use.

When I qualified they asked that anyone with a SA/DA pistol not start with the hammer cocked. Not sure what the reasoning was there, other than that when you draw that pistol it'll be with the hammer decocked more than likely.

They're not too worried about using your 'actual carry gun" since the license is specific to the licensee, not to the pistol they'll carry. I understand some states licenses are firearm-specific and restrict you to carrying only the specific gun you qualified with. Luckily Texas isn't that stupid.

BTW, don't be too worried about the difficulty of the qualification. Only one person in my class failed the range test, and she was using a pistol she was completely unfamiliar with and was pulling low/left with every shot. If you're competent with your pistol you'll do fine, whatever sighting method you're using.

Luckily I have a couple of options . I am guessing maybe someone showed up with a scoped wheel gun at some point?
The language is vague- “..optical enhancers are not allowed..”

I’m more concerned about the wife having a malfunction and getting frustrated. She doesn’t shoot very often. Although she has already been introduced to a local gal that trains a lot of women, so I’m hoping she’ll get more interested and take some classes.

Yeah, make sure she's using a gun she's comfortable with and that isn't likely to choke on her.

I have loaner pistols available in various calibers. That's how I handled it. No charge for the loaner if they used their own factory ammo. Ammo, yes I charged for. Instructors are not allowed to clear malfunctions for the student.

Instructors should give you the expectations of firearms competency and how the range qualifications will be performed BEFORE the class...

If you have a reliable 22LR caliber pistol your wife shoots well, I would suggest she qualify with it.....

Like I said....all about the integrity of the instructor....

People who haven't taken the course usually worry most about the shooting test. I did see a guy fail once, but he was an absolute mess. I'm not sure how he managed to drive to the class. The shooting test is so incredibly easy that it could only weed out someone who was blind or brain dead. At the time the rules were written, very few people had red dot sights and it was probably intended to rule out lasers. Now, red dots are small, reliable, and affordable, so you see them on all sorts of pistols. Someone should make a run at getting the rule updated, or at least clarified.

When I took the shooting test I was on the far left end of the line. The guy to my immediate right had a borrowed S&W 36 that was badly out of time and shooting lead all over me.

His target had maybe half the holes it should have. He was so scared of shooting a gun he was shaking so bad I think that's what put the revolver out of time.
