As cars get more features like lane avoidance etc all, the cost of repairs goes up thus insurance goes up.

In July my car got hit. To me it looked like it just needed a passenger front door, some body work on the fender and rear door. They totalled it. So now I have a 21 model of the car with more options and a higher trim level. 7000 of my favorite dollars plus the settlement.

You can get "low mileage" insurance.

Uses a plug in dongle to track.
I don't want to have a bird dogging monitor in my vehicle. I had to endure a baby sitting device in my company truck for several years. It monitored every move I made if the ignition was on, allowing a bored manager to continually follow me. Every minute it recorded my speed, braking, seatbelt, cell phone use. I then would get an email several days or weeks later asking me to explain an abrupt lane change or excessive braking necessary to avoid the actions of other drivers.

Yes, plus the possibility of hitting a $100k vehicle raises rates. Youth can be a factor since I recall my used pickup (cost around $5k new) at the ripe age of 16 costing $1200 a year for full coverage.

Features and design raise costs. I had a simple Mazda car that I swapped for a new Jeep Wrangler back in 2019. The Jeep cost at least 2x the price of the Mazda (when it was new) yet my premium dropped 20%. I guess big and bulky had an advantage.

In 2022, I traded a Mazda SUV for a Honda hybrid SUV and those rates went up about 20%. I suspect all the sensors and potential to damage a battery are the drivers of that cost increase. I've heard Tesla rates are crazy and I'd love to see a rate on that ugly cybertruck that's probably non-repairable.

It might be worth looking at your deductibles and coverages. We have a higher deductible than when we only had two cars. On older vehicles consider if collision coverage is really worth it for you.

There was a piece on this recently, I can't find it at the moment, but large-scale disasters like hurricanes, high car costs, crumple zones, labor costs and more all increase insurance payouts, which in turn increase insurance rates.

A high %age of drivers have seen increases in their rates in recent years, even excellent drivers. As mentioned above, shopping around is key, maybe bundling all your insurances with the same company.

I had automobiles and house bundled with state farm for many years until they decided to increase rates at every opportunity. Now have two homes and three vehicles insured with USAA. The increases at state farm also resulted in my wife's daughter, her husband and their sons changing from state farm to USAA.

Your age is also a factor. After you reach a certain age, your rates go up every 2 years. At 79 years old mine is a little over $3000 a year for a 2016 truck and a 35 ft RV. That is through Farm Bureau.

I admit that I pay a bit more every month for a reduced deductible. I also found out that based on certain coverage levels, you may get a lower deductible rate but they may not tell you leaving you at a higher deductible. I discovered it through running several what if quotes through the app for my insurance company. I did later discuss that with an agent who verified that is a fact.

Even out here in the rural area where I live, there are a number of high end trucks, Audi’s, Porsches, at least one Maserati, as well as the many vehicles that should not be on the road.

Likely the biggest factor is the threat of hail damage for rates in Texas.

While I pay a bit more for USAA, I know from working hundreds of accidents, they tend to take better care of their customers.

3 vehicles and two motorcycles with them, but the motorcycles got transferred to Progressive (second motorcycle is like a few dollars more per year).

However spending around $3K a year is getting old. My home is combined with USAA, along with checking and savings accounts.

Having seen many people go through issues with claims, I have held on to USAA. I would hope rates would go down, like back when it was a few hundred a year, but those days seem long gone, even as all my vehicles are older now, I end up paying more every year it seems, when it used to go down.

I'm going to catch heat for this, but my auto insurance renewal is going down this month. It's dropping a whole $11 per six months.

I'm with USAA and I have my homeowners, VPP, and auto(Ram and Challenger) with them. I pay about $450 a month. They won't cover my motorcycle so that's with someone else for $600 for the year. I dont know what that renewal will be in February.

I have never had an issue with them on auto claims.
they barely cover the motorcycle that a USAA driver rear ends.. I know this first hand. The worst experience I have ever had with an insurance company.

Sounds like what State Farm tried to do to me after their client t-boned my truck. The floor of the cab was rippled so it was totaled. I had to file on my insurance since State Farm drug their heels on trying to get it fixed for 3 months. In the end they ended up paying more to my insurance company than what they were authorizing to get it fixed. They wouldn't even send out someone to look at it. They went by pictures alone.

I cringe to think what I'd be paying if I had bought the ZL1 Camaro I was looking at a few months ago. The boss said I could get it, but I dragged my heels just thinking what I'd do with something like that. Insurance for it would have only gone up a couple hundred every six months then, now it would be almost unthinkable.

I was going to buy a new 5.0 Mustang. Decided against it for various reasons - glad I did from an insurance perspective. My 2011 Honda Pilot is a little less to cover I think.

We also have excellent driving record and $1K deductible on everything, but I will not go to progressive for anything, ever.
Had progressive on my motorcycle years ago. While riding with friends, one of them hit ,something, in the road. It hit my bile and took out the stater. Insurance covered it. Cost was 600.00 dollars. Progressive covered it..kinda..
With my $500.00 deductible, they paid $100.00 and I paid $500.00. When I got my next bill, they had raised my payments 500% a month. I called them and canceled the same day.

If I’m gonna use the insurance, it’s gotta be worth it. Years ago, when I had an actual long time agent, I ran some hypotheticals by him regarding payouts deductibles and premium hikes. This was a snap shot of my age, income, vehicles, driving record and coverage, but at that time the claim had to be ~$3500 for me to break even. Claim amount minus deductible minus premium hike over 30 months or whatever it was at the time. That was in the 1990s. I assume that amount to be much more than that today.

A vehicle insurance policy is only as good as their claims process. Cheaper rates mean zilch if they don't help you when you need them. Period end of sentence...
