There is different kind you can buy. They are fairly cheep.
Here is a link so you can get an idea.
    AK47 Ammunition Review

I think you can get some .223 monarchs at Academy for a good price.
But Monarchs are very dirty ammo most people dont like them.

    1.) An AK-47 doesn't shoot .223, she needs 7.62x39

2.)Most people down here like Monarch due to it's price...just clean your gun.

yes...but they make up a very small percentage of AK's... actually less than 1%

If someone doesn't specify they usually have a 7.62x39....

    maybe we should ask her???

Ilovepinkguns, can you get to his gun and see what it says, if anything, on the gun?

While y'all are comparing calibers, don't forget the other commie round, the 5.45x39.

ilovepinkguns, you can read the side of the rifle and it should tell you what caliber it uses.

At the least, get us a picture of the magazine it uses.

Not trying to bust anyones chops...

    just most are in 7.62

Kinda like when someone says they have an AR....unless they specify, most of us assume it is .223 even though they make them in other calibers.

Cases (the shiny metal part the bullet is seated in) are made usually from brass. The cheaper ammo is generally made of steel (dull grey in appearance). The only thing you really need to look out for is lacquered case ammo. It will gum up the chamber and can cause problems. It will be on the box.

Bullets are often made of many metals. The usual rifle bullet is lead core with a copper jacket. Essentially it's a lead bullet with a copper exterior. Soft tip ammo has an exposed lead tip that is primarily designed for hunting usage; the soft tip expands into a mushroom shape upon impact. Steel core is found in cheaper Russian bullets. It's basically a small steel rod that is in the center of the bullet. It is designed to improve penetration through hard barriers (like cars, doors, etc.).

Basically just go to Academy's and buy up a bunch of steel case Monarch 7.62x39mm. The only thing you should look for is that it is NOT lacquered. It comes in little 20-round boxes.

+1 for the above post.....nothing would make an AK owner happier on Xmas morning than a whole bunch of plinking ammo...it shoots good and wont mess up an AK...

it runs about $4.87 per box right now at Academy.

The other stuff you asked about is just the same gun, but they shoot other caliber bullets...
AK was originally designed to shoot 7.62x39 and the vast majority still do, but some folks like other calibers so they made some in other calibers for them....we want to keep everybody happy!

I heartily disagree with the above.

The Kalashnikov has been running for decades on lacquer coated ammunition without any ammo related problems.

Now, when we're talking steel cased ammo for your AR15, NOW WE CAN HAVE GUMMING ISSUES (but not any whatsoever for the AK).

Don't worry about lacquered or polymer coatings, just buy the cheapest stuff you can find. There is no "match" ammo, as this isn't a "match grade" rifle.

    For Cryin out loud guys

She needs to look at the rifle and make sure she has the correct caliber.

While most AK's are 7.62x39, they are made in that caliber, .223, 5.45x39, and .308 Win.

So she simply needs to check that first and then get back to us.

And Monarch is Barnaul manufacutered Russian ammo and is just fine.

The AK is after all designed to shoot Russian ammo.

And she might consider ordering the ammo on-line and having it delivered. That's the cheapest way to get it.

But lets start with the correct caliber. Probably 7.62x39 but lets just confirm. :)

And full metal jacket or fmj will do nicely I am sure. If he wants this for fun shooting and not hunting, that's the stuff.

Here are a few places to get it: AMMOMAN.COM d/b/a Discount Distributors Ammunitionstore.com - Thousands of new products coming September 1st. Ammo, Ammunition, Rifle Ammunition, 9mm Ammo, Military Surplus J&G Sales Discount Hunting Gear, Discount Hunting Boots, Discount Shoes, Discount Ammunition, Discount Ammo, Discount Boots, Military Surplus, Outdoor Gear At the Sportsman's Guide Classic Arms Inc.

And Wolf is a good brand, Golden Tiger (Vymple factory Russia) is good, Barnaul is good.

All of these are Russian manufactured and the lowest cost - still very good ammo.

The domestic brands like Winchester and Remington are very pricey. Other brands like PMC and S&B are also good and also expensive in comparison to the Russian stuff.

    Hope that helps.

Ilovepinkguns, if the AK is in fact 7.62x39 here's a link to the ammo at Academy that some of the others mentioned:

    MONARCH 7.62 MM X 39 MM AMMO

Here's pictures of some of the different brands of 7.62x39 ammo you might find at Academy or many other places:

Some people don't like to scrape the lacquer out of the cold chamber when they get home, if they have the choice.
. . . but it doesn't make a percentage point of difference if they do or don't with a 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 Kalashnikov.

A couple percentage point difference for .223 AKs.

On another note: polymer melts, if you get it hot enough.
