i'll look into that one thanks , its just that if i get a rifle without a scope it'll be a long time before i'll get one , where if i get one with a scope i can use it then later upgrade the scope, dunno

If someone else can vouch for the Mossberg rifle, then go for it. You might shop around to see if there are any shops offering the Weatherby with a scope as a package deal. It would likely also be a low-end scope, but upgradeable as money allows. I'm not necessarily hung up on the Weatherby, I just know that it is one of the best buys currently out there.

Welcome!! Before I can offer advice, could you tell us what you would like to do with your rifle? Will it be used for hunting, target shooting, plinking or just learning how to shoot rifles? Let us know what your goals or your desires are and we can help get you something to fit your needs.

Since you have never shot a rifle before, I would normally suggest a smaller caliber of rifle than the .270 to start with. It might kick a little and if you develop a flinch, it can be hard to get rid of.

Have you any previous experience with shotguns or pistols? Tell us a little more and we can help you better.

hello, thanks for the welcome, i have always shot pistols but i've seen people shoot at the 100yd range and it looks like something i wanna try. so i would use it for target shooting. i have a friend out in del rio that always tells me to go hunting so if i get good enough maybe i'll do some hunting. i guess it'll be an over all learning experience. thanks for the time

I use to think people were crazy if they spent more on a scope than they did on the rifle until I put a Leupold on my 30-06. Its the difference between "hitting the target" and consistantly hitting the center of the target : ). Dont skimp on your scope.

I just read a article in the new Shooting Times Magazine (March, 2009) regarding Cheap Scopes by J.Gutherie that was pretty interesting. It hasn't been posted to their web site yet though.

Care to elaborate on why it was interesting?

As you can probably tell, I am somewhat of a novice regarding rifles and scopes. I have many (by my standards) pistols and revolvers which I shoot often, so I am fairly up to date on hand guns.
Like the original poster, I am interested in acquiring a good rifle and as good a scope as possible as a limited budget can afford. I'm not poor, just sorta frugal. When I find a article that helps me understand the use of a scoped rifle and since the original poster asked about a inexpensive scope setup, I thought he might get some info from the article, as I did.
I realize often there is a lot of opinions and B.S. in the gun rags. Did you not find it informative for a novice (which you probably aren't), and if so, why? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I really want to know.

I'd start with something that has iron sights. If you want to find out what rifles are like to shoot on the ultra-cheap, look around for old surplus commie rifles. Mosin Nagants can be had for under $100 and ammo is still cheap.

If it wasn't for the 100 yard thing, I'd suggest a .22 caliber rifle (probably a Marlin Model 60, pristine ones are worth $100). They're reliable and accurate to 50 yards easy, I've used mine at 100 with good results, too. They last about forever, mine is as old as I am! :D

    A ruger 10/22.

    Parts everywhere, reliable, accurate.

With .22 you can practice a lot more, there is simply no comparison in ammo price. Once you have the fundamentals of sight picture down and
probably haven't developed a flinch, buy another rifle or 10, maybe 20...
